He might not have wowed Europe in 2013, but Ralfs Eilands, part of PeR, has won the prestigious award of the European Person of the Year in Latvia. Eilands follows the footsteps of Renars Kaupers (2000) and Marie N (2002) as the third Eurovision related Latvian to receive the award.
The award is presented by the European Movement of Latvia to Latvians that positively represent the country in Europe, and exhibit true European values. Ralfs Eilands was awarded the title following a public vote.
The public described Ralfs Eilands as “creative, publicly active, with strong opinions. He allows himself to be popular whilst expressing unpopular opinions. Ralfs is a fantastic person who is unafraid to speak out and does not sway from his words. He represents democracy and those people who cannot stand up for themselves”.
Eilands has previously defended members of the LGBT community in Latvia. He has also been a positive voice in advancing the rights of minorities in the country. He also acts as a member of jury in the Latvian national selection “Supernova”.
