What happens when a crooner teams up with one of Germany’s most popular singers? Well, Germany got to find that out last night! On the annual Christmas show, Helene Fischer performed a duet with Engelbert Humperdinck, the man who represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012.
Helene Fischer: A tradition
Ever since 2011, German superstar Helene Fischer has been hosting a show on 25th December. During the three hour programme, many other celebrities join her on stage. In previous years, we’ve seen quite a few Eurovision stars joining Fischer. These include Luca Hänni, Udo Jürgens, Il Volo and the Buranovskiye Babushki.
Besides Eurovision stars, Helene Fischer usually has some world famous names on stage as well. Just think about singers like Tom Jones, James Blunt and Luis Fonsi. Usually, the show gets a market share of approximately 20% – close to six million viewers.
Engelbert’s hit
Last night, Engelbert Humperdinck made an appearance on the show as well. Together with Helene Fischer, he performed his 1967 hit single “Release Me”. In the middle of the song, Humperdinck even finds time to mention how the song is 53 years old.
Engelbert Humperdinck released the single back in 1967 as a cover. He stormed the charts and turned “Release Me” into a #1 single in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Belgium. The song also scored majorly in other countries, such as Germany and the Netherlands. It was the start of a fruitful career for the now 83 year old singer.
Back in 2012, BBC selected Engelbert Humperdinck to represent them at the Eurovision Song Contest in Baku. His song “Love Will Set You Free” was a typical Humperdinck song, but it didn’t go down well in Europe. The United Kingdom found themselves in 25th place with just twelve points at the end of voting.
Nevertheless, Humperdinck’s status as legendary crooner has not been harmed by his participation. He’s still touring the world and remains to be a beloved singer in his genre. Aside from the duet with Fischer, Humperdinck also performed his latest single “Don’t Let The Old Man In“.
