Rotterdam 2021🇳🇱 Netherlands

🇳🇱 Rotterdam requires additional €6.7 million to host Eurovision 2021

Since the cancellation of the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest, it has been questioned if Rotterdam will be hosting the contest when it returns next year. Now, Dutch media are reporting that an additional €6.7 million is needed for Rotterdam to host the contest.

Insurance won’t cover cancellation

Dutch newspaper Rijnmond reports that the full cost of the cancellation of the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest has not been covered by insurance. The news was announced by the mayor of Rotterdam and its alderman.

The additional €6.7 million has been requested to the city council of Rotterdam host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021. This figure is an addition to the €15 million that has already been spent for the contest to be held this year.

If Rotterdam City Council decides to agree to fund the additional €6.7 million, this would be used in order to rent Rotterdam Ahoy, the required security, as well as the Eurovision village in Binnenrotte. Whether or not organisers decide to scale back their plans from the 2020 contest remains to be seen. Truthfully we will not know what to expect from the next contest until the pandemic ends.

Eurovision 2021

Last month, we put together an article with everything we know about Eurovision 2021 so far. This includes the countries to confirm their participation, the returning national finals and the artists that have been internally-selected to participate next year. So far, the 13 confirmed artists are:

  • 🇦🇺 Australia – Montaigne
  • 🇦🇹 Austria – Vincent Bueno
  • 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan – Efendi
  • 🇧🇪 Belgium – Hooverphonic
  • 🇧🇬 Bulgaria – VICTORIA
  • 🇬🇪 Georgia – Tornike Kipiani
  • 🇬🇷 Greece – Stefania
  • 🇮🇱 Israel – Eden Alene
  • 🇳🇱 Netherlands – Jeangu Macrooy
  • 🇷🇴 Romania – Roxen
  • 🇪🇸 Spain – Blas Cantó
  • 🇨🇭 Switzerland – Gjon’s Tears
  • 🇺🇦 Ukraine – GO_A

Now with 22 countries confirming their intentions/terms of participation for next year’s contest, this leaves 19 countries who were due to participate in the 2020 contest left. We expect that the remaining broadcasters will publish more information in the coming months, depending on the political climate.
