Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon aims for Glasgow to host Eurovision

OVO Hydro as potential venue

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon hopes to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in her Glasgow. The statement comes following the EBU’s decision earlier today to take away hosting rights from reigning Eurovision champions Ukraine.

“A perfect venue on banks of the River Clyde”, says Sturgeon

Nicola Sturgeon, who’s a member of the Scottish National Party, has said she would be happy for Scotland to host Eurovision next year. As potential city, Sturgeon was keen to immediately suggest Glasgow. The city is not the capital of Scotland, despite being the biggest city with approximately 600,000 inhabitants.

OVO Hydro the venue of choice

Sturgeon suggests a venue on the banks of the river Clyde and that can, logically, only mean one thing. The OVO Hydro would therefore be submitted as the next venue for the Eurovision Song Contest. As a concert venue, it can host up to 14,300 spectators. Before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, Glasgow’s OVO Hydro was the second best selling music venue in the world, only behind Madison Square Garden in New York.

Glasgow has been a name on the lips of many since the United Kingdom emerged as a potential host of the Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision has travelled to Scotland once before, as Edinburgh hosted the contest back in 1972. Glasgow is also home to an international airport and, as a city, has a similar size to Rotterdam, which hosted the contest in 2021.

In the United Kingdom, many cities have reported their interest in hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. Below, you can see a map of all current bids. ESCXTRA.com will bring you updates on all of the bids in the upcoming days.
