Rina Sawayama was allegedly approached to be the UK act of Eurovision 2023

During an episode of the Euro Trip Podcast, Nick Levine said that Sawayama told him she received an offer to be this year’s British act

British-Japanese singer, actress and model Rina Sawayama is no stranger to standing on a big stage. And according to Nick Levine, she was close to standing on another one this year. According to Levine, Sawayama told him that she was approached by TaP to appear in Eurovision Song Contest this year as the British performer. Allegedly, Sawayama thought about it and got back to the British team, but she never heard from them again.

Mae Muller for the UK

Instead of Sawayama, TaP ended up sending Mae Muller to the contest with “I wrote a song”. Muller ended up 25th out of 26 in the grand final, narrowly beating out Germany, who ended up last. You can watch Mae Muller’s performance here:

Of course, it is not yet possible to confirm whether Sawayama was actually approached, since these are claims from Levine.

The claim came out at the same time as TaP announced the end to their Eurovision collab with BBC.
