🇮🇸 Netflix to sponsor Iceland’s Eurovision participation

According to Icelandic news outlet visir.is, Netflix and RÚV, the Icelandic national broadcaster, just signed a deal worth approximately 10 mill ISK/73 000 euro. Back in November visir.is reported that Netflix is working on strengthening their position in the Icelandic market. This deal with RÚV is just the last in a series of projects for Netflix in the country.

Netflix in Iceland

As we reported a while back, Will Ferrell is making a Eurovision film for Netflix. Parts of this film is set in Iceland, and the crew filmed in Húsavík last year. Rumour has it that it is based on Birgitta’s Eurovision experience. She represented Iceland at the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest. In addition to this, famous Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur is working on a ten episode drama series for Netflix. It will center around an eruption of the volcano Katla.

Visir.is did not manage to get in touch with program director at RÚV, Skarphéðinn Guðmundsson, to get his comments on the news. We will keep you up to date in any developments regarding this.

The fans react

Reactions from Icelandic Eurovision fans vary from ecstatic (“Wonderful! We’ll have an amazing Söngvakeppnin and performance in Rotterdam”) to the more laconic ( “At least RÚV has funded the fine they got because of Hatari…by selling themselves on the altar of capitalism…”).
