Chantal Janzen scores top ten hit with “Schultenbräu” alongside Donnie

Bilingual guilty pleasure anthem delivers chart success

Eurovision 2021 host Chantal Janzen has scored her first ever top ten single in the Netherlands. In a surprising colleboration with comedic rapper Donnie, the duo has hit #9 in the official Top 40 with their song “Schultenbräu”.

“Schultenbräu” is a bilingual phenomenon

The song, which is named after the cheapest beer brand available at discount supermarktet Aldi, has been making waves in the country. It’s rapidly becoming a classic on any party where there’s room to play guilty pleasures galore. The song speaks of a holiday lover from a skiing trip in Austria. Obviously, that requires a blasting chorus in German. As Chantal used to host The Voice Kids in Germany, the German chorus won’t have given her any issues. With profound Dutch lyrics in the verses like “Our love didn’t last long, but it was hotter than a deep fryer”, it’s a sing along for a good party.

The song was written as the Anthem for the Guilty Pleasure Month at radio station Q Music in the Netherlands. DJs Mattie Valk and Marieke Elsinga also feature in the official video of the song.

For Chantal Janzen, it’s her first top ten hit as a credited artist, as she did collaborate on the song to celebrate the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander in 2013, the “Koningslied”. That reached #2 in the charts. She mostly works as a TV host nowadays, but started her career in musical theatre. She’s collaborated with several artists on singles before as well. In 2021, she hosted the Eurovision Song Contest from Rotterdam together with Jan Smit, Edsilia Rombley and Nikkie de Jager.

Donnie, the rapper she’s worked with this time, is known for his Dutch language party rap. He’s worked with De Toppers singer René Froger to release “Bon Gepakt”, which made it to #5 on the Top 40 chart. He’s also teamed up with Kris Kross Amsterdam, who are hoping to go to Eurovision next year. Their song “Vanavond” made it to #7.
