More countries confirm for ESC 2023, but will we see one return?

Over the past few weeks, a number of countries have confirmed they will be back to compete for the title at Eurovision 2023, so let’s catch up on these updates.

The first of these countries is Norway, who’ve said they will be at Eurovision 2023.

The Norwegian broadcaster NRK has also confirmed that they will once again use Melodi Grand Prix to pick the Norwegian entry for next year.

Melodi Grand Prix has been used to pick every single Norwegian entry at Eurovision with the exception of the 1991 contest.

Next country who has confirmed they will be back at Eurovision next year is Norway’s neighbour Sweden.

Although the Swedish broadcaster SVT has confirmed they will be back next year, they have not stated whether they will use Melodifestivalen again next year. However, Melfest has been held annually since 1959, except for when Sweden did not compete in 1964 and 1976.

Moving further south, and neighbours Austria and Germany have both confirmed they will be back next year despite their less then ideal results this year.

Austrian broadcaster ORF have not confirmed what method they will use to select their artist for next year, but they have used internal selections for the last several years.

Likewise, the German broadcaster NDR have not confirmed their selection process either, but they have used both internal selections and National Finals in recent years.

Amongst all this excitement of countries confirming their participation, there was news of one country perhaps returning to the contest for the first time in 10 years.

Yes, although Slovakia have teased fans a number of times with the prospect of them returning, but there is still a chance they will be back next year.

Despite the Slovak broadcaster telling ESC Today that they won’t be back next year, the Czech site Eurocontest.cz is reporting that an actual decision won’t be made until August at the very earliest.
