Katrina Leskanich calls for Manchester to host Eurovision 2023

Following yesterday’s news confirming the United Kingdom will host next year’s Eurovision, Katrina Leskanich has spoke of her preference for Manchester to be the host city in 2023.

‘An absolute privilege’ to host

As the bidding process begins this week, Katrina, who won Eurovision 1997 with her band Katrina and The Waves, spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live on who she thinks should host the contest.

While the British public discuss their favourites to host, Katrina is backing Manchester.

‘[There were] just some cities that are just crying out to host and I think Manchester is one of them. It would be at the very top of my list as it meets all of the criteria.’

She added that it has ‘everything you need’ from the infrastructure to its famous Gay Village. On top of that, Katrina describes Manchester as ‘a great party city’.

Manchester set to make 2023 ‘a Eurovision to remember’

Councillor Bev Craig, who is also the Leader of Manchester City Council, confirmed that a bid will be submitted. As stated by Craig, Manchester has ‘experience in hosting major events’, and is also ‘one of the UK’s largest Ukrainian populations’.

Katrina at the Eurovision Song Contest

Katrina represented the United Kingdom at the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, as lead singer of Katrina & The Waves. Their song “Love Shine a Light” won the contest with 227 points, and they remain the most recent winners of the contest for the UK. Receiving 10 sets of 12 points, Katrina & The Waves won the contest 70 points clear of runners-up Ireland.
