The Slovenian Head of Delegation, Aleksander Radić, has revealed that RTVSLO would push back their selection show as late as possible, under Scenario D circumstances. Ana Soklič, who was due to represent Slovenia at Eurovision 2020, will represent the Balkan nation again next year.
Scenario D would occur in the case of a full lockdown in the Netherlands. This means no delegations would be present at the venue and all participants would perform their entries from their home country. Virtual events would also replace the usual on-site activities.
Same stage, no audience
Speaking on the Humans of Eurovision YouTube series, Aleksander Radić revealed that by pushing the selection show to a later date in the calendar, it would enable the broadcaster to record their final Eurovision performance on the same stage as the national final. This would enable the broadcaster to save money as they would not need to rebuild a new set, weeks after the selection.
Regardless of the scenario selected for the contest, all countries are required to submit “live-on-tape” performances for the 2021 contest. This is in case of a unforeseen circumstance such as the artist having to quarantine whilst in Rotterdam. The recordings must be submitted by the end of March, and countries cannot send recordings direct from their national selection.
The Slovenian broadcaster confirmed in October that they had received 191 potential entries for the 2021 contest – a record number of entries. A possible list of songs is set to be announced on RTVSLO’s website by 31st December, with the Slovenian entry being revealed no later than 9th March 2021.
Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest
Slovenia made its debut on the Eurovision stage as an independent nation in 1993, after winning Kvalifikacija za Millstreet and getting the right to compete. They qualified along with Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia. The act selected to represent the country for the first time was 1X Band, who sang “Tih deževen dan”. They finished in 22nd with nine points.
Since then, Slovenia has competed 24 times overall as an independent nation. The country’s best results have been twice in seventh place. The first one was in 1995, thanks to Darja Švajger who sang “Prisluhni mi”. Meanwhile, the second of those came in 2001 with Nuša Derenda and “Energy”.
In 2020, Slovenia selected Ana Soklič as their representative with the song “Voda” She will return for the 2021 contest.
