The Scoop🇮🇸 Iceland

🇮🇸 Daði Freyr releases a cover of Eleni Foureira’s “Fuego”

Daði ain't cooling down!

Daði Freyr was set to represent Iceland at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest with the group Gagnamagnið – but since the contest was cancelled, he has released a cover version of Eleni Foureira’s “Fuego” on his YouTube channel!

Reaching out to his fans on Twitter, Daði held a poll to see which Eurovision fan favourite he should cover. With 32.2% of the vote, it was “Fuego”, by Eleni Foureira that was chosen to be covered. “Fuego” beat songs like “Je Ne Sais Quoi”, “Lipstick” and “Arcade”.

Daði is on fire!

Sporting his green sweater, Daði starts the videos by talking about how he wanted his fans to have control over his cover:

Eurovision was cancelled yesterday [Wednesday], but this morning I asked my Twitter followers to tell me what song from Eurovision they wanted me to play. And this is the song.

– Daði Freyr

The cover sees a different take on the 2018 Eurovision runner-up, with more of a funky 80s vibe, similar to the style heard in his Söngvakeppnin winning entry, “Think About Things”.

Eurovision fans will originally remember “Fuego” as the Cypriot song for the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. The fan favourite finished in 2nd place in Lisbon, behind Israel’s Netta. Nevertheless, it has gone on and found itself in the top 10 of the Eurovision Top 250 for the past two years.

“Excited for the future”

The cancellation of Eurovision doesn’t seem to be bothering Daði as he keeps spirits high.

I would like to thank the Eurovision community for the support in the last few weeks. Eurovision is cancelled but I am really excited for the future. Now on to make more music!

Many countries have already announced that their 2020 entrants would be returning for the 2021 contest. Iceland are yet to confirm whether Daði og Gagnamagnið will be invited to take part again next year!

Do you like Daði’s “Fuego” cover? Are you hoping he returns to Eurovision 2021? Are you looking forward to his new music?
