🇨🇭 SRF will not take part in Junior Eurovision 2020 in Warsaw

SRF, Switzerland’s German language broadcaster, confirmed on Twitter that they will not send an artist to Warsaw this year to compete in Junior Eurovision 2020.

After Germany announced their participation in this year’s contest, fans asked SRF on Twitter whether they would participate as well. They quickly put these hopes to rest, stating on Twitter:

This is not currently planned. We want to focus on the original ESC. We are happy to promote young Swiss music talent through our own platforms.

This does not mean that Switzerland as a whole is confirmed to not return. Two other broadcasters, RSI and RTS, could still confirm participation for the Central European country.

As of July 11th, 11 countries have confirmed their participation in the contest:

  • France
  • Georgia
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Kazakhstan
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Spain
  • Ukraine

Switzerland in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Switzerland competed in Junior Eurovision once, in the 2004 contest in Lillehammer. RSI, the Italian broadcaster in Switzerland, selected Demis Mirarchi with the song “Birichino.” Switzerland placed 16th out of 18 countries with 4 points, all from Malta. RTS, the French broadcaster in Switzerland, also showed the contest, while SRF did not broadcast the show at all. Switzerland has not participated since.
