Junior Eurovision 2023: Our Top 10 (10-6)

Junior Eurovision week is here again, and it’s time to reveal our Top 10! The team here at ESCXTRA have scored all 16 of the 2023 Junior Eurovision Song Contest entries and we’ll be counting down our top 10 along with a selection of reviews. Has your favourite made the top spot? Let’s find out!

Last year we revealed our top 10 of the 2022 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, crowning 🇬🇧 Freya Skye with the song “Lose My Head” as our winner. Our previous winners have been:

Today we reveal the first five from our top 10 and the final five later this week!

10 – 🇬🇪 Georgia: Anastasia & Ranina “Over the Sky”

Sean 🇺🇸

I was surprised to see that this barely made the top 10 in our poll. For me, this is another of a long streak of quality JESC entries from Georgia. There is more traditional influence in this song than there has been in the past few Georgian entries, and I welcome it. This could very easily be a jury success, but the vocal delivery matters more for this song than most this year. Also, gotta love a queen serving bob.

09 – 🇵🇱 Poland: Maja Krzyżewska “I Just Need a Friend”

Lisa 🇬🇧

“Small town girl” – Duncan Laurence shook. I like it, it’s uplifting, kid friendly and has pleasant rise and fall moments in the melody. Also the dog in the video is adorable, and why not have a pet be your best friend? They are family after all.

08 – 🇺🇦 Ukraine: Anastasia Dymyd “Kvitka”

Lisa 🇬🇧

If I had a child, this is exactly what I would make them listen to as a gateway into Eurovision. ‘Kvitka’ fits the Junior Eurovision brief perfectly – kid friendly, playful, but also showcasing traditional music. Ukraine are so good at making their rich and diverse music scene, accessible to all.

07 – 🇩🇪 Germany Fia “Ohne Worte”

Bente 🇳🇱

This song is just so sweet and wholesome, and it makes me smile 🙂 While the song itself does not stand out too much (though it’s still really nice!), it’s the whole message and performance that ties the whole thing together.

Alex 🇬🇧

I was really sad about Germany not taking part last year (Imagine Us is still an underrated banger!) so was already happy to see them back, but this entry is way better than I expected! When listening to all the songs together there’s something about this track that really stands out. The production is excellent, the song is an absolute earworm, and the use of sign language makes this entry very easy to root for. Team Fia!

06 – 🇲🇰 North Macedonia: Tamara Grujeska “Kaži mi, kaži mi koj”

Lisa 🇬🇧

If you told me to average out an all-time ranking of JESC nations, you would probably find North Macedonia right up there. It is very rare they disappoint me. This is so classy and professional. I need this at Eurovision, North Macedonia would qualify with ease! I love that subtle blend of symphonic Balkan instrumentation with modern, RnB ballad fusion.
