In addition, for our immediate reactions to every single rehearsal, you can follow our live stream from the press centre at the Altice Arena by visiting our YouTube channel.
First up for their first rehearsal is Claudia Pascoal for Portugal. We have just watched their latest run through of O Jardim live on screen and here is our initial reaction.

Staging

Remarkably, for the first 1 minute and 40 seconds of the performance, Claudia is filmed using entirely close shots with soft transitions in between each camera cut. Claudia is surrounded by sporadic gold lights. Once we finally switch to a wider angle, it is revealed these lights are props on stage that look like photographer spotlights.
When Isaura is introduced with the first wide angle shot, she is standing stage left to Claudia. She is only visible for around 10-15 seconds before we return to a series of close shots of Claudia until the end of the song. A beautiful performance.

Camera shots in this performance: 34

Vocals

Claudia’s vocals are absolutely stunning, with her unique vocal tone and overwhelming emotion. Isaura provides support where needed but does in no way overshadow Claudia’s delivery.

Costume

Today, Claudia is wearing a pale pink nightgown style dress with her beautiful pink hair falling below her shoulders. Isaura is wearing casual clothes, including a black Nirvana branded t-shirt. We expect these aren’t the final stage costumes, particularly in Isaura’s case.
