The Scoop

Demi Lovato talks Eurovision movie: “Oh my gosh, I’m playing an Icelandic popstar!”

Yesterday, Netflix released the long-awaited movie “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams. Also featuring in a few scenes during the movie is global popstar Demi Lovato and she has been promoting the film with a number of interviews during the past week.

“I just said yes!”

Talking to former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson on The Kelly Clarkson Show a couple of days ago, Demi explains how her role as Icelandic popstar Katiana came to happen… and how she had to do an Icelandic accent!

I don’t do accents and, to be honest, I was so excited to do a movie with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams that i just said “yes” without thinking that “oh, I’m going to have to do an accent!”

So the day before, I’m in London about to shoot and I’m like “oh my gosh, I’m playing an Icelandic popstar!” I needed to know how to speak like an Icelander, it didn’t dawn on me! I did my best and luckily its a comedy… you won’t see me play an Icelandic popstar in a drama any time soon!

Eurovision is “beautiful, powerful and inspiring”

Amongst early reactions on social media, Demi’s musical contribution to the film, “In The Mirror”, is certainly considered one of the highlights of the soundtracks alongside Molly Sandén “Husavïk”. Indeed, these two tracks are already charting across several iTunes charts across the world.

Talking to eurovision.tv about the concept of Eurovision itself, Demi was inspired by the fact that Eurovision was created after the Second World War to bring divided nations together once more:

I think it’s really beautiful that there’s something like Eurovision that brings people together, especially in this day in age when there’s so much hate in the world. When you’re able to turn [the devastation of] a war into something positive and bring people together through the universal language of music, it is beautiful, powerful and inspiring.
