We haven’t even had Junior Eurovision in 2020 yet, and we are already have countries confirming their participation for 2021. The Netherlands, one of the countries that has continuously participated since the inception of the contest back in 2003, has confirmed that they will be participating in next year’s competition.

Junior Songfestival to select their representative

Applications are now open until the 31st December to aspiring singers who are interested in taking part in ‘Junior Songfestival 2021’. The Dutch broadcaster, AVROTROS, will once again use their national final format to select their entrant. With the exception of 2016, they’ve always used Junior Songfestival to pick their entrant.

Throughout the years, the exact format has changed a little. In some years, the show mostly took place online, but this year, a televised show had the preference of the broadcaster. The number of participating entries usually varies as well. AVROTROS are expected to confirm such details at a later stage.

The Netherlands at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest

The Netherlands debuted at Junior Eurovision in the inaugural contest in 2003. They are one of only two countries, along with Belarus, that have taken part in every contest since it began. The first Dutch act at the contest was Roel with “Mijn ogen zeggen alles”, which finished in 11th place.

The country’s first top three placing came in 2009 when they won the contest, held in Kyiv. Ralf Mackenbach represented the country with “Click Clack” and walked away victorious with 121 points. Since then, they have managed one more top three placing, in 2011, with Rachel’s “Teenager” which finished in 2nd place.

In 2020, The Netherlands will be represented by the Girl Group ‘Unity’ with their song ‘Best Friends’
