Rehearsal review

As with many of the Nordic national finals, we pretty much knew what we were going to get. Fyr og Flamme interrupted their first public run through due to a technical issue, but soon picked up and delivered the performance with energy and enthusiasm.

There’s a lot of 80s neon vibes going around when Denmark hit the stage. The backdrop is full of pink squares and light blue lines, very much as in an 80s club vibe that we knew we were going to get. Jesper Groth, the lead singer, throws some good looks into the camera to make sure he’s connecting with the audience at home. At first, they are static on the two circular platforms they have brought. On stage, three backing vocalists accompany them. Jesper and Laurens are dressed like they were in DMGP – the outfits have not changed. The backing vocals in this rehearsal haven’t gone all out with the 80s, but that may happen later in the week.

After the second verse, Jesper jumps off his platform and storms towards the B-stage. He’s definitely got the speed to do it, but it very much looks like he’s in a hurry at times. A good example of that is when he jumps back onto his platform near the end of the song and nearly trips. It’s fair to say that there is a lot of energy, which is helped by the camera shots. The camera takes us from close-ups to wide shots, but it’s very dynamical. At the end of the last runthrough, we get a bit of pyro.

To have this as a show closer is a comforting, light-hearted breath of fresh air. It’s happy, upbeat and the theme of blue and pink is making a grand return. But in the end, we knew what was coming and we got what we thought we would.
