🇱🇻 Laura Rizzotto joins Grammy jury

Laura joins an illustrious panel

Laura Rizzotto, the Brazilian born singer who represented Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 with the song “Funny Girl” has joined the Recording Academy.

What does the Recording Academy do?

The Recording Academy is responsible for the nominations and subsequently award winners at the annual prestigious Grammy Awards. These awards are awarded to those who show excellence in music industry, whether that is in singing, performing and recording. These awards help make up the EGOT alongside the Oscars (for film), the Emmys (for television) and the Tonys (for Broadway performers).

There are two types of Grammy Awards. There is the main Grammy Awards and there are the Latin Grammy Awards. These are an affiliated award show that awards excellence in the music industry that are in Spanish or Portuguese. These are organised by the Latin Recording Academy.

There’s more

Additionally to being an integral part of the Grammys. The Recording Academy also has two side projects and they are Grammy U and MusiCares. Grammy U is an educational project that aims to get young people into the music industry in various ways; from production to singing to songwriting and business skills. MusiCares is the philanthropic side to the Recording Academy. This serves as a charity, raising money for human resources. You can see this with their mission statement below.

MusiCares provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. MusiCares’ services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality. MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly influence the health and welfare of the music community.

So as you can see being part of this group of people is a highly sought after position and comes with a large range of responsibilities.

Eurovision and the Grammys

The Grammy Awards and Eurovision you’d have thought would go hand in hand, what with Eurovision being a stage and music competition. This is however not the case. Only one song in Eurovision’s entire 74 year history has won a gong. That goes to Domenico Modugno of Italy. He won two Grammys in 1958 for the runner up entry “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” for Record and Song of the year.

Since then only one other song has come close to a win. That is Gina G with her song “Ooh Aah… just a little bit”. Despite only coming 8th in Oslo 1996, the song gained massive popularity outside of Eurovision. In 1998 the song was nominated for Best Dance Recording.
