🇮🇸 Iceland: Daði Freyr to release Eurovision 2021 entry March 13

The song will be revealed during a special RÚV broadcast about Eurovision

Earlier this month, Daði Freyr revealed in an interview with RÚV that his 2021 entry would be revealed in March. Now, the broadcaster has confirmed that Iceland’s 2021 entry for Eurovision will be revealed via a special broadcast on March 13.

Iceland’s Eurovision 2021 entry, one of the most-hyped of this year’s contest due to the success of its predecessor, will be revealed on March 13. The song has been chosen and final touches are being made, with the addition of a ‘Eurovision choir’. He previously teased it as an ‘upbeat pop song’.

Being one of the favourites to win the 2020 contest, Daði is coming into 2021 with a competitive mindset. Staging and costuming is being developed, as is a music video for the song, due to be released at the end of March. There will even be an accompanying video game.

This is a competition so we have the mentality to win this. Most emphasis is placed on advancing to the finals so that there can be a good party here on Saturday. I do not see the whole point of competing in a competition if you do not intend to see if you can win.

Having competed in the Icelandic selection Söngvakeppnin in both 2017 and 2020, Daði has commented on the difference between writing a song for a national final and for an internal selection:

We know that we are going into the real competition so it can be justified to put everything into this. I have a lot ready that I did not have last time. You can plan things further ahead instead of going to the national final without knowing if we will continue on to Eurovision.

Special programming from RÚV

In the two weeks building up to the release of the song, a two-part documentary series will be broadcast about Daði Freyr and Gagnamagnið. The documentary follows the band from their 2017 participation in Söngvakeppnin through to the success of “Think About Things” throughout 2020. Part one will air on February 27 and part two will air on March 6.

In addition, the reveal show for their 2021 entry will mark the first of a new series Straumar, which will showcase Icelandic music trends and popular culture throughout recent decades. The first show on March 13 will be about the history of Eurovision and Iceland’s participation in the contest.
