NDR & KiKA statement on JESC 2022 withdrawal

As countries slowly begin to announce their artists taking part in Yerevan this December, others are stepping away from the contest for the moment. One such nation is Germany, who recently announced a temporary hiatus from participation. In a statement received by German Eurovision site ESC Kompakt, NDR the German broadcaster, confirmed their withdrawal from Junior Eurovision 2022. Among the reasoning is a hint at a creative break to return with fresh ideas, as well as references to the safety aspects of travelling to a country still in a state of active conflict. However the door is open to a return next year. Despite the withdrawal, the Yerevan contest will still air on KiKA as expected.

In the past two years, NDR and KiKA have participated in the Junior ESC with great commitment and great enthusiasm, despite many corona-related adversities. This year we want to take a creative break in consultation with KiKA. This also applies to the fact that the Federal Foreign Office has issued partial travel warnings for Armenia. Next year we want to take part in the JESC again. As usual, JESC will be broadcast from Yerevan on KiKA for all fans.
