Rotterdam 2021🇳🇱 Netherlands

🇳🇱 Jeangu Macrooy to release entry in early March

Another March release to add to the list!

Host country The Netherlands will reveal their entry for Eurovision 2021 in early March. Cornald Maas confirmed the news on RTL’s talkshow Koffietjed yesterday.

After the contest’s cancellation last year, AVROTROS quickly decided to select Jeangu as their act for the 2021 contest. Since then, news about the Dutch entry has been limited until this announcement of a March release.

“Miraculously succeeding in that mission”

Speaking on Koffietjed, the Dutch Eurovision commentator confirmed that the Netherlands will not release their entry until early March. This reflects the release date of their entry in recent years – like 4th March for “Grow” and 7th March for “Arcade”.

Maas, who has been commentating on the contest since 2004, said that he has a “lot of appreciation” for Jeangu as he prepares for the upcoming contest, held on home ground.

I have a lot of appreciation for Jeangu and his team for how they dealt with the situation… But at the same time, you go into the contest less uninhibitedly, because you know you have to deliver a song that is suitable. You are already the artist. Meanwhile, you also have to do it in a time that is not really inspiring. Corona, lockdown, you get to do less new things, but [Jeangu] is miraculously succeeding in that mission.

The Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest

One of the founding Eurovision nations, the Netherlands had a strong start in the contest winning two contests before the end of the 1950s. They then went on to win again in 1969, and for the fourth time with “Ding-a-Dong” in 1975.

After that, the Netherlands’ luck seemingly run out and the nation could not even score another top 3 result in the 20th century, despite only missing three contests in 1985, 1991 and 1995 (they went onto miss a fourth contest in 2002).

Their lack of luck continued into the 21st century, with the Netherlands managing an eight-year non-qualifying streak from 2005 to 2012. However, in 2013, with Anouk’s “Birds”, they managed to make the final and finish in 9th place.

The results only improved from there, and after scoring a second place finish in 2014, the Netherlands won the contest for the fifth time in 2019 with Duncan Laurence’s entry, “Arcade”. Jeangu Macrooy will represent the nation in 2021, after the contest was cancelled in 2020.

Are you excited to hear Jeangu’s entry? What genre are you hoping to hear this year?
