The British broadcaster responsible for the organisation of the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2023, BBC have confirmed that the host city will be decided via a two step bidding process. They haven’t however given themselves long to do it!
The country two step
In a press release containing various FAQs, the BBC gave a bit of detail regarding how the host city will be selected. They stated the following.
There will be two rounds. Once we have received applications, we will shortlist cities based on their ability to meet the requirements and their responses around capability and experience.
They then went into detail regarding the requirements following up with this subsequent information.
The final decision on selecting the Host City will be based on a city or region’s capacity and capability in meeting the BBC’s and the EBU’s requirements, as well as availability of resources and general experience in hosting a large and complex event such as the Eurovision Song Contest.
For example, last year the EBU’s Host City criteria was based on providing a venue able to accommodate at least 10,000 spectators (as well as a press centre), that should be within easy reach of an international airport and with ample hotel accommodation.
We may consult with the UK government but the decision on who will be the Host City will be determined by the BBC and the EBU.
New season new host city
As previously stated, BBC have not given themselves a long time to select a host city. They stated that we will know ”in the autumn”. This speedy bidding process is not surprising seeing that the BBC were already at a time deficit.
What to expect from Eurovision 2023
The first important information is that Ukraine will automatically qualify to the Grand Final. The UK will also qualify as a member of the Big Five. We shall thus return to a Final night with 26 countries competing for the win.
The shows will be organized by the BBC, but Ukraine’s UA:PBC will send representatives to help the British hosts “develop Ukrainian elements” in the production of the contest. The statement already announces that the logo (which has not yet been revealed) will reflect the special and unique circumstances behind this special hosting. It is indeed the first time since 1980 that the contest will be held outside the winning country.
