Two weeks on from the final of this year’s Sanremo Music Festival, four of the competing entries have managed to make it onto Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart – which lists the top 200 songs based on digital downloads and streaming in over 200 countries, excluding the United States.
The four entries are kept in good company on the charts, alongside global hits like Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” and The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” and “Blinding Lights”. The entries are the first four fully Italian songs to feature on the Global Excl. U.S., since it launched in September 2020.
Francesca & Fedez chart highest
Entering the chart at number 100, “Chiamami per nome” is the highest-charting Sanremo entry in the Top 200, with 11.4 million streams and 3,300 digital sales. The song, performed by Francesca Michielin & Fedez, placed second in the music festival behind Måneskin. However, the winning entry, “Zitti e buoni”, only managed to reach number 106 on Billboard’s chart with 11.1 million streams and 3,500 sales.
The best-selling Sanremo entry on chart was Colapesce & Dimartino’s “Musica leggerissima” racking up 4,800 downloads with an additional 9.3 million streams leading it to number 120. Madame’s “Voce” completed the Sanremo ‘Billboard line-up’, charting at number 146.
The artists become the latest six Italian artists to have an entry in the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, following the likes of Meduza and Gigi D’Agostino. Elsewhere in the world of Billboard charts, Eurovision 2019 winner Duncan Laurence is finding ground in the United States. His entry, “Arcade”, is currently at number 16 on the Adult Contemporary chart and number 32 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart.
Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021
Held later than usual this year, the Sanremo Music Festival saw 26 acts take to the stage of the Teatro Ariston with the winner getting first refusal to represent Italy at Eurovision 2021. After five shows, including a six-hour final, Måneskin emerged victorious with 40.7% of the vote in the superfinal. They will perform “Zitti e buoni” at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam.
Måneskin are a 4-piece rock band hailing from Rome, consisting of vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio. The band met in high school and made their breakthrough after coming second in the Italian X Factor back in 2017.
Since their win, “Zitti e buoni” has sold 35,000 copies across Italy, granting them Gold certification. A few days ago, the group released the “Eurovision Version” of their entry which is cut down to meet the 3-minute limit at the contest. As a member of the Big 5, Italy are automatically in the final on 22nd May. Italy will also vote in the first semifinal, on 18th May, along with Germany and host nation The Netherlands.
