Eurovision 2019 winner Duncan Laurence will perform during the first semi-final and grand final at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. The performances are set to be “unmissable” and a “unique contribution” to the shows in May.
Duncan is no stranger to the Eurovision world after he won the contest in Tel Aviv in 2019. Last year, he performed his single “Someone Else” during Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light, which was held in Hilversum, in place of the cancelled contest. This year’s Eurovision Song Contest will run from 18th to 22nd May at the Rotterdam Ahoy.
Bringing a new song to the stage
Duncan will open the first semi-final, delivering a ‘clear message’ that “the Eurovision Song Contest is back and we are going to celebrate it!”. Then, during the grand final, he will perform a brand new song as well as his 2019 winning entry “Arcade”, which has gained global success over the past few months, hitting the UK charts and featuring on American TV.
Speaking to Eurovision.tv, Duncan said that he is excited to perform at the contest “where it all started” for him:
I am really looking forward to performing at the Eurovision Song Contest. We have all had to wait so long for it, but it is almost there. It is very special to be able to return to the stage, where it all started for me two years ago.– Duncan Laurence, speaking to Eurovision.tv
Eurovision 2021’s Head of Show, Gerben Bakker, has also shared his excitement for Duncan’s performances, saying that he is “convinced” that his performance will move viewers again in May.
It is special to work with Duncan and his creative team. In recent months, we have worked hard to present performances at a high level. In short: the quality that we are used to from Duncan Laurence and with which he brought this unique festival to our country. I am convinced that with his performance in the Grand Final he will touch the viewers again.– Gerben Bakker, speaking to Eurovision.tv
Several other interval acts have also been confirmed for the contest including opening acts from Redo & Eefje de Visser and a flag parade with music from Pieter Gabriel. Ballet dancer Ahmad Joudeh and BMX biker Dez Maarsen will also impress viewers during the interval act at the second semi-final while past Eurovision winners will return to “Rock the Roof” during the grand final.
Duncan Laurence at the Eurovision Song Contest
The Netherlands internally selected Duncan Laurence to represent them at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song “Arcade”. In Tel Aviv, Duncan brought The Netherlands to the Grand Final for a fourth consecutive year. In addition to his participation in the Grand Final, Duncan also won the Press Award at the Marcel Bezençon Awards as voted for by the Press.
After 44 years, Duncan managed to win the Eurovision Song Contest for The Netherlands. The last time the country won the contest was in 1975 with “Ding-a-dong”. After the cancellation of Eurovision Song Contest 2020, Duncan Laurence is still the reigning champion until May 2021.
