Joost Klein Unveils “Europapa,” the Dutch Hope for Eurovision 2024

The Dutch music scene is abuzz with excitement as Joost Klein releases his Eurovision entry, “Europapa,” set to compete in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden. The song, a blend of electronic hip-hop with touches of drum-hardstyle, was premiered during a special broadcast of De Avondshow, hosted by Arjen Lubach.

“Europapa” is not just a song; it’s a personal journey, a letter from Joost to his late father, and an ode to Europe. The lyrics reflect Joost’s life experiences, conveying a message that there are no borders to what one can achieve. This sentiment is encapsulated in the song’s narrative, which follows an orphan’s quest across Europe in search of identity and belonging.

The track stands out with its unique sound, a collaborative effort between Klein and fellow Dutch rapper Donnie. AVROTROS, the Dutch broadcaster, selected Klein’s song from over 600 submissions, citing its strong European hit potential as the decisive factor.

This selection comes after a disappointing year for the Netherlands in Eurovision, with the 2023 entry, “Burning Daylight” by Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper, failing to advance beyond the semi-finals. The Netherlands aims to rebound from last year’s low with Klein’s “Europapa.”

Joost Klein, known online as EenhoornJoost, is a Dutch musician who began his career on YouTube before venturing into music in 2016. His personal losses at a young age and his subsequent rise in the music industry add depth to his Eurovision entry, making “Europapa” not only a song but a story of resilience and hope.

Klein’s musical journey, marked by the success of his mixtapes and albums, shows his evolution from a YouTube personality to a serious musician. His latest work, “Europapa,” is expected to bring a fresh and dynamic performance to the Eurovision stage.

The Netherlands has a rich Eurovision history, with five wins since their debut in 1956. After a period of mixed results, the country found success again in 2019 with Duncan Laurence’s “Arcade.” Joost Klein’s “Europapa” is the latest chapter in the Netherlands’ Eurovision story, carrying the nation’s hopes for a strong showing in Malmö.
