Recently the vocalists of Finland’s Blind Channel visited a livestream of a popular podcast Otetaan yhdet. During the livestream they told that they were asked not to put their middle fingers up at Eurovision.
Is it against the Eurovision rules?
During the UMK21 performance, the group threw their middle fingers up as the lyrics of the song suggest. However, it seems that this is something they shouldn’t be doing at the contest. The rule book of Eurovision Song Contest states that “no swearing or other unacceptable language shall be allowed in the lyrics or in the performances of the songs”. While the middle finger in the lyric is not enough to be classified as “swearing”, putting them up on the performance is probably something that goes against the Eurovision rules.
During the livestream, the vocalist Niko Vilhelm and Joel Hokka said that they were asked to not to put their middle fingers up at the live performance at the contest. It’s not clear if this came from the broadcaster Yle or the organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Blind Channel won Finland’s UMK21 by a landslide last month. The group got over 54 percent of the televotes in the final and was the favourite of the international jury. Earlier this month we also reported about the city of Oulu opening a scholarship fund in the name of the band to promote local music culture.
Finland will compete at the second semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 on May 20th. Blind Channel is set to perform on the second half of the show. The running order of the show is set to be published after all the competing entries have been released.
