Rehearsal review

Rehearsing right now inside the Rotterdam Ahoy is Jendrik, performing “I Don’t Feel Hate” for Germany. We will continue to update this article as each run through takes place, so make sure to keep refreshing for the most up-to-date review!

Jendrik is wearing a pink sparkly jacket with black undershirt, blue trousers and a necklace with the text “annoying”… and his ukulele! He’s joined by three female backing musicians/dancers dressed in modern monochromatic patterns as well as another female dressed in a giant inflatable middle finger outfit. The German is wearing a head mic, or “Britney mic”, something we’ve seen a surprising amount of performers do in this contest including Destiny and ROXEN.

The LED backdrop switches between the familiar rainbow of colour powder as we saw in the “I Don’t Feel Hate” music video and lots of negative words in various different languages which get swallowed up by the colour in the instrumental breakdowns! In the verses, we also see a blue backdrop. For the first two choruses, only Jendrik and the middle finger partake in the choreography, with the three backing musicians staying stage left. However, for the final chorus, all five of them join for the choreography on the satellite stage.

During the instrumental solo there’s a very effective use of the LED backdrop as Jendrik and the four female dancers “push” the backdrop back and forth with the middle finger. During the final chorus, the stage blacks out whilst Jendrik does his “speech”, although in this rehearsal he explains in his speech that we won’t find out what he will say until the grand final on May 22nd!

Rehearsal video clip
