ABBA nominated for ‘Record of the Year’ at 2022 Grammy Awards

The first nomination for the Eurovision 1974 winners!

Tonight the Recording Academy has announced the nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards. Among the nominees are the Eurovision 1974 winners ABBA, who have scored their first ever Grammy nomination in the ‘Record of the Year’ category for ‘I Still Have Faith In You’ from the latest album Voyage.

The Grammy Awards have faith in ABBA

Earlier this year ABBA announced their comeback with brand new music after a 40-year absence. Along with an ambitious, digitally produced, live ABBA Voyage Tour. Recently the Eurovision 1974 winning super troopers released ninth studio album Voyage, a journey the ABBAMania fanatics had been waiting decades for. More than worth the wait, the album has charted at no.1 in 19 countries worldwide. As well as smashing UK chart records. Back in September ‘I Still Have Faith In You’ was jointly released as the first comeback singles, along with ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’. Both tracks sailing to UK chart success.

Tonight the Recording Academy have recognised this success and awarded the Swedish group their first ever Grammy nomination after 48-years, for the single ‘I Still Have Faith In You’. Next year at the 2022 Grammy Awards, ABBA will be up against – Jon Batiste, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Brandi Carlile, Doja Cat & SZA, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo and Silk Sonic in the ‘Record of the Year’ category.

One of the main awards in the show, this prestigious category recognises the achievements in music engineering, production and mastering. As well as the performance quality of the nominated song. Moreover the nomination is based on the vote of music industry peers and students, such as fellow artists, producers and musicians. Although this is ABBA’s first Grammy nomination, the group have been recognised by the Grammy Hall of Fame for 1976 hit ‘Dancing Queen’.

Eurovision success at the Grammys

When many have cried “Too good for Eurovision!” the Recording Academy has most definitely disagreed. Over the decades, many names from Eurovision past and present have been been acknowledged for their contribution to the music industry. Previous winners at the Grammys include – Celine Dion, Olivia Newton-John , Domenico Modugno and Julio Iglesias. Meanwhile Gina G, Bonnie Tyler and Il Volo have also received nominations in past years.

However, only two Eurovision entries in the history of the Grammys have been nominated. During the first ever Grammy Awards in 1959 ‘Nel Blu, Dipinto Di Blu’, which came third for Italy in the 1958 contest, went on to win ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Record of the Year’. Thus, this remains the only Eurovision entry to ever win a Grammy. Much later in the 1996, Gina G’s UK entry ‘Ooh Aah… Just A Little Bit‘ saw the Australian pick up a nomination for ‘Best Dance Recording’.

Måneskin at the Grammy Awards

Earlier this week, the Recording Academy announced a surprise group of presenters for the award reveals. This years’ Eurovision winners Måneskin, who have ridden a wave of success since May, arrived on stage to announce nominees in the classical categories.

From one awards show to another, as the Italian group were nominated at last weekend’s American Music Awards 2021. Despite missing out in the ‘Favourite Trending Song’ category, the group won over a new legion of American fans with their performance of worldwide hit ‘Beggin”. Whilst also rocking the red carpet in matching suits to pay tribute to the original performers, The Four Seasons.
