🇧🇾 Belarus to announce Eurovision 2021 representative on 4th March?

Could we finally be hearing news from Belarus?

OGAE Belarus have reported that BTRC have selected the Belarusian entry for Eurovision 2021 and will reveal Belarus’ representative on 4th March. This suggests that a national final will not be held to select their entrant.

The broadcaster made an open call for entries in January and later announced that around fifty entries were submitted to the selection. BTRC did not invite their 2020 entrants, VAL, back to this year’s contest despite the cancellation of last year’s contest.

More news this week?

Earlier today, OGAE Belarus posted on VK that “Belarus has made a choice” with an announcement due this Thursday (4th March). However, this news has not yet been officially announced by BTRC.

Belarus are currently one of just four countries that has not yet made an official announcement regarding their selection process alongside Armenia, Poland and Russia. Earlier this year, the Belarusian Foundation for Cultural Solidarity launched a campaign to remove Belarus from the contest. The foundation claimed that BTRC was “not a media broadcaster, but an instrument of political pressure and propaganda”.

The EBU responded to the campaign stating that Belarus would not be removed from the contest as the Eurovision Song Contest has “no political agenda”. Belarus are set to compete in the first half of the first semi-final on 18th May.

Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest

Making their debut in 2004 with “My Galileo”, Belarus didn’t make their first Eurovision final until 2007. In Helsinki, Dmitry Koldun secured a sixth-place finish with “Work Your Magic” – this remains the country’s best result to date.

They have since made five more finals – including, most recently, in 2019 when ZENA scored 31 points in the final, and finished in 24th place overall with her song, “Like It”.

Last year, VAL were selected to take part in the contest for Belarus with “Da vidna” – which would have only been the country’s second song in Belarusian after “Story of My Life” in 2017. Unfortunately, the contest was cancelled and VAL weren’t invited back for the 2021 contest.
