As we’ve said a number of times this year, this is an elevated version of the national final performance. Malik is surrounded by a lot of instruments on stage but begins his performance at the piano with a looper on top of it. He hits the loop button and moves over to his drum pad, and he hits it in time with the beat through the first verse. The looping live illusion is broken when he steps forward to the mic stand with the acoustic guitar from his back and he sings from the mic stand for the first chorus.
There is a really very effective use of the steady cam throughout this performance and very, very few camera cuts. It took until the final minute for there to be a set of cross-fades and static camera shots. Whilst the lighting is golden and white for the majority of the performance, the rap section adds a really strong strobing effect to back the increased aggression and energy from Malik.
Costumes and styling
Malik is dressed casually in a beige t-shirt with dark trousers and trainers. It really suits him as a performer who ‘appears’ to be recording the song at home with the staging.
This is an incredibly consistent and undeniably strong performance from Malik through each run-through of the rehearsal today.
This is a nice entry from Germany, beautifully staged and Malik gives it his all. The question remains though about how this can perform with voters alongside the other 24 finalists. We’ve seen more impressive staging concepts, we’ve heard more radio-friendly songs. All of that being said, this is going to be a lovely three minutes.
