Turin 2022🇮🇹 Italy

🇮🇹 Turin City Council votes unanimously in favour of Eurovision 2022 host bid

Chiara Appendino, the Mayor of Turin, has formally announced Turin’s candidacy.

As we wait for the bidding process for Eurovision 2022 to get fully underway, many Italian outlets are already speculating which city will end up hosting. We previously reported that two politicians submitted motions for debate in Turin’s City Council concerning Eurovision 2022. This week, both motions passed unanimously, confirming that Turin will be entering the formal bidding process.

In our previous article, we revealed that both motions progressed to the next stage of debate in the City Council, in which the motions will be voted on. Eurofestival News have reported that both motions received 33 favorable votes in the council out of 33 councilors present yesterday. This makes Turin the first Italian city to formalise its candidacy to host Eurovision 2022.

Chiara Appendino, the Mayor of Turin, then closed the council session by formally announcing Turin’s candidacy. She called on the support of the Cultural Council Commission, and cited that Turin were lined up to potentially host if Italy had won Eurovision 2017. With Rai having met with the Eurovision Reference Group in Geneva last week, the requirements for candidates will likely be released soon. Once released, the formal bidding process will likely take place over the summer.

Although local politicians cannot directly sway the EBU and Rai’s ultimate decision, the support of local politicians will likely ensure that the city’s bid is as strong as possible and less likely to be withdrawn as the bidding process continues. With the support of local politicians being instrumental in securing additional funds for Rotterdam to weather the pandemic, this support may also strengthen Turin’s bid.

Twelve cities showing interest

Italian broadcaster Rai will be holding a bidding process to determine which city will host the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. By our estimations, Turin is currently a frontrunner, and is seeing support from local politicians, who are now pushing for the city to host.
