Andrew Lambrou to represent Cyprus at Eurovision 2023

Andrew is no stranger to the contest, taking part in Australia Decides in 2022

CyBC has announced that Andrew Lambrou will represent Cyprus at next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool. He is no stranger to the contest after taking part in Eurovision: Australia Decides in 2022 with “Electrify”. Details about his entry for 2023 will be released in due course.

The island nation get ready for Liverpool

Following Israel’s confirmation of Noa Kirel in August, Cyprus becomes the second country to announce their representative for the upcoming contest in the United Kingdom. After initially being rumoured to use ‘All Together Now’ to select their 2023 entry, OGAE Greece announced in August that Cyprus would stick to an internal selection for Liverpool.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Cyprus’ Head of Press Andreas Anastasiou said that “more details about the entry will follow at a later stage”. The Cypriot broadcaster CyBC has teamed up with Greece’s Panik Records and Australia’s City Pop Records for their participation in the 2023 contest.

The Sydney-based singer-songwriter Andrew Lambrou has been gaining fame through posting impressive singing covers that have consistently gained up to two million views. He first shot to attention after uploading a cover of Evanescene’s “My Immortal” to YouTube in 2013. Andrew has over 1.5 million followers across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube collectively.

He began singing at the age of 5, discovering his love for music at the AMS Music School. He describes his music as “pop with dark elements to it”. Australian fans may recognise Andrew from the 2015 series of The X Factor Australia where he made it to the top 20, at only 17 years old.

Cyprus at the Eurovision Song Contest

Although the Cypriot broadcaster has opted for internal selections in recent years, there was a time where Cyprus hosted national selections for Eurovision. Their last national final was the Eurovision Song Project back in 2015. This selection not only produced their 2015 entrant John Karagiannis, but also Minus One (2016) and Hovig (2017).

After the three Eurovision Song Project alumni, RIK has mostly opted for Greek female pop soloist, bringing consecutive qualifications with Eleni Foureira (2018), Tamta (2019) and Elena Tsagrinou (2021). This year, Andromache brought the Greek language back to the Eurovision stage for Cyprus for the first time since 2013. She sadly failed to qualify with her “Ela”, placing 9th with the televote, 18th with the juries and 12th overall with 63 points.
