The race to Melodifestivalen begins to heat up

The race to Melodifestivalen begins to heat up

In news that will surprise absolutely nobody, Ace Wilder is seemingly in the hot seat to lead Sweden onto home turf in Stockholm. According to Aftonbladet, familiar faces are afoot with another former finalist returning in Oscar Zia, as well as an upcoming début appearance by Idols winner Lisa Ajax. In case you’re new to the Eurovision scene, on her Melodifestivalen début Ace Wilder was the runner-up to seven-time entrant Sanna Nielsen back in 2014. Losing by only the most slender of margins, in fact it was the smallest margin of victory in Melodifestivalen history (2 points), “Busy Doin’ Nothin'” went on to spend four weeks at number one on the Swedish chart, Sverigetopplistan. If Aftonbladet is to be believed, we’ll be seeing Oscar Zia for a third participation, his second as the lead gentleman. Eighth place is becoming a thing for Oscar as after finishing 8th place on The X Factor 2012, “Yes We Can” came eighth in 2014 as Zia’s first solo entry, heading straight through to the final from semifinal 3 before he became a juror for 50% of Sweden’s vote at the Copenhagen contest. The previous year, Zia was involved in Behrang Miri’s performance of Jalla …
Are Bosnia-Herzegovina out yet again?

Are Bosnia-Herzegovina out yet again?

We haven’t seen Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Eurovision Song Contest since 2012 when Maya Sar came 18th with ‘Korake Ti Znam’. After three years of absence from the contest it looked like we might finally be welcoming them back along with other returnees including Ukraine and Bulgaria. However, it looks like it could be another case of so near, yet so far, as yesterday it was confirmed that Bosnian broadcaster BHRT has withdrawn its application to compete in this year’s contest due to lack of funding. This isn’t the first time that this has happened. For the last couple of years, BHRT expressed an interest in returning to Eurovision, but ultimately was unable and pulled out at the last minute. It looks to be the same again this year, although the EBU has thrown the broadcaster a lifeline. BHRT has been given until the end of October to apply again if it so desires. So whilst things are looking bleak for Bosnia-Herzegovina’s return, and effectively they are out of the 2016 contest as of now, all is not lost. If the means to afford participation can be found before the new extended deadline, then we might be seeing Bosnia-Herzegovina back at …
Trijntje’s backing impresses Perez Hilton

Trijntje’s backing impresses Perez Hilton

Eurovision and talent shows seem to have an eternal connection. Backing vocals, singers whose careers have not exactly been flourishing lately – They all appear on The Voice, X Factor and we could go on. The latest addition to the list is Trijntje Oosterhuis’s Vienna backing vocal Jennie Lena. Her audition even managed to convince American showbusiness blogger Perez Hilton! Jennie Lena’s audition aired on The Voice of Holland back in September and today, Perez Hilton dedicated an article to her. The title says it all:  This Is. The Best. The Voice Audition. We Have EVER Seen! Jennie’s rendition of the Jackson 5 classic Who’s Loving You managed to get all chairs turned around within the first six seconds of her performance. In the end, Jennie Lena chose Anouk (yes, Birds-Anouk) as her coach. No surprise as Jennie has also worked with Anouk plenty of times. In his piece, Hilton writes the following about Jennie’s performance: This is the definition of SLAYING it! We’re pretty sure if Michael Jackson were still with us, he’d turn his chair around too! So, what do you think? Was Jennie’s audition one of the best auditions you’ve ever seen?

Have you heard that… (week 40)

What is Daniel Kajmakoski doing in hospital? Which 2012 participant thanks seat belts they’re still alive? Who just had a baby, and who’s next? One recent winner has a serious sweet tooth; who might that be? Find out the answers to these questions, and more, in this week’s “Have you heard that…” …Iceland‘s Greta Salóme was in a serious car accident in Florida yesterday? The 2012 participant says she and her boyfriend are still alive only due to the fact thay were wearing seat belts. Greta had to spend ten hours in hospital in Orlando, but is convinced she wouldn‘t have survived the crash if she hadn‘t worn her seat belt. The car was totalled, and the couple is lucky to have suffered fairly mild injuries. …Daniel Kajmakoski has donated a respiratory machine worth 17,700 eur to the Intensive Care unit at the Children‘s Hospital in Skopje? What can we expect from the rumoured names?

What can we expect from the rumoured names?

ARMTV said they’d reveal their act on 13th October yesterday, but that doesn’t stop the rumour mill from going in full swing. Currently, about four names seem to cover most of the rumours. Time for us to take a look: What can we expect from any of these four performers? Athena Manoukian 21 year old Athena Manoukian is probably the most prominent rumour at the moment. Not only does she fit the very basic picture of a female solo singer, she can be linked to the Armenian Eurovision entry in multiple ways. Rumour has it ARMTV was planning to include Athena in the 2015 group Genealogy, but for some reason that didn’t work out. It definitely wasn’t because of a lack of interest: She repeated several times that she would love to do Eurovision and get back in touch her Armenian roots. She now lives in Sydney, which may explain why the video released yesterday by Eurovision.tv may have an Australian accent (is it truly Australian though…?). Added to that, she was in Yerevan the past few weeks. Coincidence? Maybe, but it seems Athena Manoukian is a clear favourite to fly the Armenian flag in Stockholm. What can we expect from …
Anouk about Trijntje: “What the hell was that?”

Anouk about Trijntje: “What the hell was that?”

Uh oh, trouble in the Dutch Eurovision land. Anouk has spoken up about Trijntje Oosterhuis’s performance in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. And she wasn’t happy what happened there… During the show RTL Late Night, where Anouk appeared to talk about her new role as coach on The Voice of Holland, she was asked about Eurovision. When the conversation turned to Trijntje’s performance of Walk Along, a song co-written by Anouk herself, Anouk let loose all of her frustrations, openly criticising the package Oosterhuis delivered. Anouk made it clear that Trijntje did a good job on the vocals, but everything else was a miss. She doesn’t regret giving her song away to Trijntje, though. Of course, Anouk mentioned the dress. The dress we all spoke about in May. Anouk said: I suddenly saw her [Trijntje] in that dress on the evening news. That’s when I thought: Geez… Shit, what the hell. I thought: Well that’s not gonna work out. […] Trijntje really didn’t expect such reactions to her dress, to which I told her that that was a little naive. I mean, if you come up with a dress all the way down to your clitoris, there’s really no surprise when people …
Not Dotan, but Douwe Bob to Stockholm?

Not Dotan, but Douwe Bob to Stockholm?

The rumour mill was in full swing, but Dutch newspaper Metro has just put oil to the small fire that existed. They have just published an article saying it’s not Dotan for Stockholm, but singer-songwriter Douwe Bob… Douwe Bob is a surprising name to many [including to this editor], as he hasn’t really scored many hits… Ever. He is one of the successful candidates on a Dutch talent show ‘The best singer-songwriter’.  The 22 year old has, up til now, released five singles, of which only one made the top 10: Hold Me. That song was a duet with the woman who’s been connected to Eurovision twice in the past years: Anouk. His other songs failed to impress in the charts. It is mainly because of his status that Douwe Bob is a surprising name. However, Avrotros have confirmed to Metro that they were in talks with Douwe Bob regarding the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. The broadcaster, as well as the singer himself, did however emphasise that no agreement had yet been reached and the decision had not been taken yet. All is still possible, it seems! The chance that the Netherlands are going with a solo male singer are more …
Youddiph appears on The Voice Russia

Youddiph appears on The Voice Russia

A big surprise on Golos, the Russian version of The Voice, last night as Youddiph suddenly entered the stage! The singer, officially called Masha Katz, auditioned with the song What’s Going On. Youddiph represented Russia on its debut in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Vyechniy Stranik and finished 9th. She is also remembered for the dress she wore that evening, which some would like to refer to as a sundried tomato… During her audition, Masha, now 42 years of age, had to sing in front of Alexander Gradsky, Basta, Grigory Leps and Eurovision’s own Polina Gagarina, who function as coaches on the show. Watch for yourself how it ended for Masha…
