RTÉ refuse to comment on Ireland’s Eurovision 2019 participation prospects

Since Israel’s victory in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, there have been calls from within Ireland for the nation to boycott the 2019 contest hosted in Israel. Last week, a campaign was launched by the IPSC (Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign).  Nevertheless, prior to the launch of the campaign, Irish deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney rejected calls for a boycott. Therefore, we have contacted RTÉ to ask for an update on their participation prospects. Declining to comment ESCXTRA.com contacted RTÉ and we appreciate the swift response received. RTÉ’s statement on the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest was as follows: RTÉ won’t be commenting at this time on next year’s Eurovision. Government says no to boycott RTÉ’s refusal to take a stance at this stage is interesting considering the Irish deputy Prime Minister’s recent comments that “ruled out” any chance of a boycott of an Israeli-hosted 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. As explained by the Irish Times, Coveney didn’t believe that an Irish Eurovision boycott “would advance the cause of Palestinians”. Executive Producer, Editor in Chief and Lead Director for Eurovision 2019 revealed

The host broadcaster for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2019, KAN, has announced two core team members for next years huge production! After the meeting between broadcaster KAN and the EBU last month, the whole foundation of the production already gets into shape for the upcoming contest. Meet Zivit Davidovitch & Yuval Cohen Zivit joins the team as Executive Producer. She worked with the Israeli Channel Ten for the past fourteen years. First as Head of Production and three years later as Vice President Production. She will join the host broadcaster KAN next month to take over her new job. Zivit worked on a huge variety of TV genres. She was for example involved in the Israeli broadcast for the World and Euro Cup, Miss Israel and the Israeli version of the Bachelor. Yuval Cohen becomes Editor in Chief and Lead Director.  Yuval also worked at Channel Ten for the past years as Head of Programmes and Development. He worked on many big events like the Israeli version of The Voice, he edited Dancing With The Stars for three years and he even has some Eurovision experience, as he did the Israeli Eurovision National Selection in 2010. EBU releases official statement regarding vote for full membership of Kosovo’s RTK

Over the weekend, Kosovar broadcaster RTK revealed that the EBU is to vote on whether to give the broadcaster full membership to the European Broadcasting Union. The decision comes after the EBU General Assembly taking place in the Albanian capital city of Tirana last week. RTK announced that this vote would take place in December. ESCXTRA.com has reached out to the EBU for further clarification and they have given us a statement. Official EBU statement Following the reports, ESCXTRA.com contacted the EBU communications team to ask exactly how this proposed vote would work. Would it be a simple majority vote including all EBU members? Perhaps it would need to be a unanimous verdict? The EBU issued us the following statement to answer our queries: RTK currently does not meet the criteria for full EBU membership but it was agreed at the EBU General Assembly in Tirana (June 29) that constructive discussions will continue between the EBU and RTK about future possibilities for closer co-operation. The opportunity to audition for Malta’s newest music competition will end in just a few days! Hopefuls can fill out a digital application, which can be found at tvm.com.mt/xfactormalta. If an act includes more than one performer, only the lead artist needs to fulfill this nationality/citizenship requirement. The brand new Maltese edition of the international X Factor franchise will replace the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, as in addition to securing a recording contract with Sony Music Italy, the winner of The X Factor Malta will represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. Masada joins the race to host Eurovision 2019

The head of the Tamar Regional Counci, Dov Litvinoff, has revealed plans for the site to host the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. “We have already dealt with huge events” states council leader Ynet reports that Dov Litvinoff, leader of the Tamar Regional Council, will submit a bid for Masada to host next year’s event – increasing the number of interested parties to five. To back up his plans, Litvinoff made the following statement: We have already dealt with huge events at Masada, such as a David Guetta show and the Israeli Opera. The Cultural Hall of Nature can accommodate more than 20,000 people. It is natural that we will deal with the event. With Masada’s setting, plus the matter of saving the Dead Sea (which will no doubt make international headlines), it is not just a place but also a message and not forgetting, one of the most beautiful places we have in Israel.   If not Jerusalem – then Masada. Swedish broadcaster SVT have announced that submissions for Melodifestivalen 2019 will open at the end of August. SVT: ‘We look forward to a new season’ In a post made on SVT’s official website, the broadcaster has announced a public call for songs.  From Friday 31 August, interested songwriters will be able to upload their submissions during a 3 week window which closes on Monday 17th September. The event producer, Christer Bjorkman shared his views on the open call for songs. As always, diversity and variety is what we want and this is why we call for songs in different languages, genres and styles. No change in number of competing songs The broadcaster have also confirmed that the number of competing entries will remain the same as in recent years.  A specially chosen panel will select 14 songs received via public submissions, while another 14 will be chosen by SVT themselves – either from the same submission pool or through invitation. In 2015, SVT reduced the number of selected entries from 32 to 28.  The broadcaster explained that the reduction would gaurantee a grand final with the highest quality of songs. Ministry official claims Tel Aviv will host Eurovision 2019

Another day, another hosting report. After a report earlier today that KAN had launched their tender for the 2019 host city, Haaretz now report that the host city has already been chosen. A Finance Ministry official has told the news outlet that Tel Aviv will host the contest. Tel Aviv Fairgrounds Contrary to previous belief, the venue in Tel Aviv would not be the Menora Mevtachim Arena. Instead, the less discussed Tel Aviv Fairgrounds now seem to be the frontrunners. Pavillion 2 there is suitable to host the Eurovision Song Contest. On the official website, the capacity of the venue is mentioned as being up to 10,000. The fairgrounds date back to the early 1920s, when construction already began. Over the years, it has developed into one of Israel’s busiest convention centres. The newly constructed Pavillion 2 is unique in the Middle East for the amount of options events there get. No bid from Jerusalem According to Haaretz, the Jerusalem Muncipality have decided not to bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest. That would also explain why Tel Aviv are back in the race. KAN launches tender for Israel’s Eurovision 2019 selection

KAN, the Israeli national broadcaster, have launched a tender process for production companies and broadcasters wishing to partner for the Eurovision 2019 Israel national selection.  The broadcaster have outlined the main criteria for the project: The show must be broadcast over a number of months in a prime time slot The selection of the Israeli artist must be completed by January 2019 The selected channel must produce a variety of content with the selection promoted over multiple platforms KAN is also looking for potential broadcasters to commit to supplementary programming around the selection process. Keshet are the first names expected to bid for the Israeli selection process. They have been responsible for “The Next Star”, which since it’s introduction in 2015 has delivered grand final qualifying artists for the Eurovision Song Contest. Reshet are also speculated to be a potential bidder for the selection process. The broadcaster currently holds the rights for The X Factor Israel, which could be turned into the selection show for Israel. Only recently Malta announced for the first time it would use it’s X Factor show as the selection for their Eurovision entry. Estonia: ERR appoints Tomi Rahula as new head of Eesti Laul

Estonia has a new head of Eesti Laul, the country’s popular national selection. The Estonian broadcaster (ERR) revealed that Tomi Rahula will replace former head Mart Normet. No stranger to the competition Tomi Rahula is an established musician, composer and producer. He is also no stranger to Eesti Laul and Eurovision. In fact, in 2011 he participated in the competition together with 2015 entrant Stig Rasta as part of Outloudz. They came second behind Getter Jaani. Besides, he was also one of the composer of the Eurovision 1998 Estonian entry “Mere lapsed” performed by Koit Toome. Mart Normet who headed Eesti Laul since its inception in 2009 was also the country’s HoD. Destination Eurovision will return for 2019

France 2 has confirmed the return of Destination Eurovision for 2019. The broadcaster has placed an advert on social media asking for authors, composers, singers (or even a combination of the three) to apply! An appetite to continue a televised National Selection After two internal selections, France brought back the televised selection in the shape of “Destination Eurovision”.  This was the first time that France has used a National Selection since 2014 when Twin Twin finished last in Copenhagen. In an interview with lemonde.fr, French Head of Delegation Edoardo Grassi have mentioned the following:  “I think that going through a televised show helps to anchor the Eurovision brand in France. This allows us to show our motivation and talk about this contest for three months” France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 Madame Monseuir won the ticket for France at Destination Eurovision 2018.  They went on to Lisbon with their song “Mercy”.
