An Xtra Happy Birthday; June 14th

An Xtra Happy Birthday; June 14th

Today’s birthday boy is truly one of a kind! When he participated in Eurovision Song Contest he was the first artist to “sing”, on a Eurovision stage, that he didn’t really want to do well in the contest, he considers nudism to be good for rheumatism and that his only rule is to always stay cool like a swimming pool… And he brought with him on stage Eurovision’s first ever TROJAN DONKEY!!! Yes, we are of course talking of none other than the legendary Rambo Amadeus, who represented Montenegro in the 2012 Eurovision in Baku. He finished 15th in the first semi final with his entry “Euro Neuro”, and today is his 54th birthday! All of us here at escXtra wish Rambo Amadeus an Xtra Happy Birthday!

Today we have two Eurovision birthdays to celebrate! One is a recent winner who turns 31, the other is one of this year’s participants who celebrates her 28th birthday!  Lest’s start by wishing Sweden’s most recent Eurovision winner Måns Zelmerlöv an Xtra happy 31st! Måns is the reason why all the children of the Euroverse went to Stockholm last May, after his victory with “Heroes” in Vienna in 2015. We also send our warmest congratulations to 2017’s Azeri entrant, Dihaj, who turns 28 today! Dihaj finished 14th with her song “Skeletons” after treating us to one of the more theatrical performances we have seen in a while. All of us here at escXtra wish both Måns and Dihaj an Xtra happy birthday!

So, the weekend is over, but that doesn’t mean there’s no reason for some celebrating! Today our congratulations go to the wonderful Amandine Bourgeois on her 38th birthday! Amandine represented France in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, with the song L’enfer et moi. She opened the show, and despite delivering a flawless performance, she only finished 23rd.

On this beautiful Sunday evening all of us here at ESCXTRA want to send our warmest congratulations to Pernilla Karlsson on her 27th birthday!  Pernilla being interviewed by Liam in Baku! Pernilla represented Finland in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, with the song “När jag blundar”. This was only the second time the Finnish entry was performed in Swedish. The first time was “Fri?” back in 1990, which was, coincidentally the year Pernilla was born! Unfortunately Pernilla and “När jag blundar” failed to qualify for the final, after finishing 12th in the first semi final.

From all of us to all of you (yeah; I know it’s a very Disney thing to say, but I don’t care!); A Very Merry Christmas! Il Volo represented Italy in the 2015 Eurovision in Vienna, with the song “Grande Amore”. They finished 3rd, having earned a total of 292 points.

A wonderful voice. From a wonderful Eurovision year. Performing a wonderful Christmas song. In a wonderful language. Oh, and he’s quite wonderful looking too… Sergio Dalma represented Spain in the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest in Rome. He performed “Bailar Pegados”, finishing 4th, with a 119 points.

Måns. I think I can come up with (approx) a handful of friends who wouldn’t mind having themselves a merry little Christmas with the reigning champion… Måns Zelmerlöw won this year’s contest in Vienna, representing Sweden with the song “Heroes”.

One of the best female voices to ever be heard on the Eurovision stage. Just bad luck for her that she participated in 2009… Almost any other year, and she would (very likely) have won. We are of course talking about the magnificent Yohanna (Jóhanna Guðrún), and here she gives us a pretty close to flawless version of “Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day”. Yohanna represented Iceland in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, with “Is It True?” She finished second, receiving a total of 218 points.

Sometimes we see established singers, who already have major careers, taking part in Eurovision. Not always with the expected/desired outcome (cough-Bonnie Tyler-cough). Today we give you a singer who is very successful in his field, and his Eurovision result wasn’t too bad, considering the performance… Amaury Vassili represented France in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf. He finished 15th with “Sognu”, earning 82 points.

In the calendar today we give you a two time “almost winner”, whose participations span not just two years, but two decades. (You know who it is yet? 🙂 ) Both entries became hugely popular, among the fans of the contest as well as outside the Eurovision community. This is one of the most successful careers to emerge from Eurovision, along with Celine Dion and ABBA. And this might be one of the most Christmas loving artist outside the Nordic countries. We give you (and I’m sure this doesn’t come as a surprise to noone); Cliff Richard! Cliff Richard represented the United Kingdom in the 1968 and 1973 contests. In his first attempt he reached second place with “Congratulations”, and in his return year he finished 3rd with “Power to all our friends”.
