Good evening Europe! The mayhem of Melodifestivalen is upon us once again. Grab your drinks, prepare your takeaways, settle down like all Swedish families do to watch the most popular entertainment show in Sweden.
Tonight is the fourth of six shows that Sweden will use to select their representative for Vienna. This the last of four semifinals tonight. Before next week’s second chance round then culminates in a huge Final in Stockholm on 14 March 2015.

We will be guided through tonight’s show by our hosts comedian Robin Paulsson and last year’s winner Sanna Nielsen.
The competitors in Semifinal 4 are:
01 – Midnight Boy: “Don’t Say No”
02 – Caroline Wennergren: “Black Swan”
03 – JTR: “Building It Up”
04 – Hasse Andersson: “Guld och gröna skogar”
05 – Dinah Nah: “Make Me (La La La)”
06 – Annika Herlitz: “Ett andetag”
07 – Måns Zelmerlöw: “Heroes”

Thank you for joining us on this liveblog of Melodifestivalen 2015 tonight. Remember that FOUR countries are picking their entries right now!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:29 pm

Ahead of next week’s Andra chansen, half of the eight entries qualified will make it through and in two weeks time, we will have a final of 12.

Join us again next week for the latest installment in Sweden’s selection process. As Rodrigo says, we’ve now seen all the songs in this year’s Melodifestivalen. One of those will win the ticket through to Vienna, the question remains who?

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:29 pm

So, that was it… we now have heard all of the songs in a MF that can, at best, be described as mediocre…

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:22 pm

Some mild rap makes the MF final for the first time since Swingfly and before that Frida och Headline back in 2008. Now onto our two Andra chansen qualifiers. Is Måns in trouble?

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:19 pm

WOW! That’s a shock of sorts. The boys will perform again as we begin to question who really is in trouble now in qualifying through to the Final.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:19 pm

I am sorry, but what the actual fuck?!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:18 pm

Going direct to the Final on March 14 at the Friends Arena, Stockholm, is…

JTR!

We’re with Filippa Bark again in the green room, we’re close to the results now.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:14 pm

We’re back in the green room… humour seems to be at its highest, as people are cracking up big time with Philippa’s show

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:13 pm

One of our best interval acts ever as with some humour we go through some former Melodifestivalen finalists with last week’s two “house singers” from the opening act. Songs include “Mirakel” and “Evighet”. Sanna is legitimately laughing.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:11 pm

The lines are closed again here in Sweden and we head to the interval act now. “Living Art in Life in Passion in Motion” featuring Robin Paulsson is our interval act here. Robin finally able to show off his skills!

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:10 pm

AAAAAND… Lines are closed!

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:09 pm

One more minute to vote!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:06 pm

As Rodrigo said we have another reprise, the lines are open again until just one minute after this reprise ends.

Two of the remaining five songs will go to next week’s Andra chansen, two more will make the Final in two weeks time and the remaining song is eliminated in fifth place tonight.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:05 pm

And now we have a further reprise… Five songs still up in the running!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:04 pm

In sixth place was Annika Herlitz and in seventh was Midnight Boy.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:04 pm

Our final song proceeding to the second vote comes from…

HASSE ANDERSSON

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:04 pm

And the fifth act to make it to the next round of voting is… HASSE!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:03 pm

The fourth song to make it through tonight is:

Måns Zelmerlöw, who looks very relieved!

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:03 pm

Måns is still alive!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:03 pm

Our third entry continuing through is:

CAROLINE WENNERGREN

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:03 pm

Caroline makes it!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:03 pm

Secondly, through is:

JTR

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:03 pm

JTR also progress…

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:02 pm

The first song through tonight is:

DINAH NAH

Dinah is the first to be announced for the second round of voting

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:02 pm

vi har ett resultat!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20159:02 pm

Sverige, and Europe, vi har ett resultat!

So, remember that five songs will go through to the second voting round tonight, two will be eliminated immediately.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20159:01 pm

If it was my choice, I would say Måns och Dinah direkt till finalen oh Annika och Caroline till andra chansen… let’s see if Sverige agrees!

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:58 pm

Our lovely colleague Nick van Lith wants to see Hasse Andersson make it through to the Final from this semifinal in Sweden tonight.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:57 pm

We head over to our interval entertainment now which throws back to last year’s MF final where Robin had to run to the stage to deliver the results and we revist that very awkward moment where we didn’t actually have results in Sweden on time. Turns out, it’s because Robin didn’t run to the stage and actually went to the toilet before taking them to Noor & Andreas. You’d never believe it but Robin dropped the results too.

Of course, you’ll remember that the delay was in fact because the televote had to be recounted several times due to how close the result was, in which Sanna Nielsen won by just 2 points.

Now, Filippa Bark is back, sadly…

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:56 pm

Lines are now closed.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:55 pm

Lines for the first round of voting are closed!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:52 pm

It’s got to be Dinah Nah, hasn’t it Rodrigo, along with the favourite Måns? I’d add JTR for the youth factor and Annika’s popularity into the mix for the places in next week’s Andra chansen.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:49 pm

Time to start making our minds up… who do we want to make it direkt till finalen, who do we want out…

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:47 pm

We’re all done with the performances here now and we head to the snap-reprise. After we’ve seen all the seven performances again, there will be just a minute more before the lines close. The top five songs will proceed through to the second round of voting which will determine our four qualifiers from tonight’s semifinal.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:47 pm

Måns… oh, Måns… wait, I’m losing focus here. Aside from how cute he looked, he was amazing. The song is very good and the effects give it an additional power that make it a contender to win the whole thing. Vocally he was great and visually it was impressive.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:46 pm

One of the absolute favourites to win Melodifestivalen 2015, Måns begins sat on the stage in front of a video screen as the guitar led backing track begins. The interactive screens bring a friend for Måns and… shall we say that the production values here are absolutely huge. The chorus begins with a muted backing track but it does build as Måns stands up towards the halfway point of it. Then it hits. The track is huge and the lighting accompanying him goes bezerk. He’s back at the video screen for the second verse and he uses it to huge affect as the projections really go well with the song and its lyrics. The screen goes bright red as he leads into this second chorus with a strong vocal, as you’d expect from this veteran pop singer. We go to the middle eight with Måns looking directly down the camera before he unleashes the biggest note he’s probably ever sung in his career. The lyrics are emotive and powerful and his vocal really does it justice but potentially the production covers up the fact that this is not his greatest entry. It is certainly, however, one of his most contemporary songs. The crowd loved it.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:42 pm

Our final semifinalist of 2015 in Sweden comes from former runner-up Måns Zelmerlöw with “Heroes”.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:41 pm

A lot was expected from Annika, and she delivered. Unfortunately, the song wasn’t as strong as I was expecting, but she performed it to perfection. The buildup is really good and when the climax comes her voice was simply outstanding. Also loved her Sarah Dawn Finer moment, it gave the rising of the song a visual effect that worked rather well.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:40 pm

Annika is stood alone on a platform on the stage. She’s in a black dress and conveys her slow Disney ballad (would you believe it?) to the audience with emotion and absolute competence. This is almost too basic but the wind machine comes in and there’s lots of lights being waved by the audience, accompanying the searchlights that are lighting the stage. Annika’s platform raises towards the sky as we hit the middle eight and now we understand where the production values is. The big note into the final chorus is fantastic. There’s a keychange, of course, and this is a song that early 00’s Shirley Clamp would be proud of. Glitter falls from the sky as the former Ice Queen powers to the end of the song with absolute brilliance. What a contrast to Dinah Nah!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:37 pm

Next up, the Swedish voice for Elsa in “Frozen”. Annika Herlitz has “Ett andetag” for us tonight, to see if she can follow up the massive success she had with “Slå dig fri” (Let It Go).

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:36 pm

Ok, so pink hair aside, this was absolutely brilliant! Dinah nailed it, the song is contemporary, the vocals were impeccable, the dance routine was brilliant, the earthquake effect with the camerawork was impressive. Simply perfect. In my books, the best entry of this year’s MF so far

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:36 pm

Dinah’s track is contemporary and the electronic elements welcome Dinah to the stage with an extraordinary strobe light show. She is dressed in a fully white outfit and as she hits the chorus, six dancers join her as the stage floods with dry ice. Remember the impact Ace Wilder had last year when she strutted out with that huge dance chorus? This does exactly the same. She shouts “let’s go” as we go into the massive post-chorus dance break and it is absolutely on fire. Full of energy and this is absolutely sailing through if the Swedes continue this trend of sending ready made popstars into the Melodifestivalen finals. The vocal is completely competent from start to finish and, for me, this performance has completely wiped the floor with everyone else before her. The chorus is stuck in your head by the end of the song and you just have to marvel at the amount of effor that goes into that astounding dance break. Her unwavering vocal delivers confidence and the dancers offer some much needed entertainment. There’s a huge note in the last chorus that Dinah powers through and it ends with a huge double clap.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:32 pm

Pink hair should not be shown in public… under any circumstance!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:32 pm

Next up is pop star in the making Dinah Nah with her catchy dance pop song “Make Me (La La La)”. She was previously in the group Caramell. Also, dr. alban is back this year as one of the writers of this entry.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:31 pm

Hasse is surely a competent performer, and I reckon that not having had any folk this year the Swedes might not rule it out. I liked it, though I got tired of it quite quickly and I felt like it went on forever. So, to sum up, a charming effort, I liked it, but I would rather not have to listen to it again.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:31 pm

This isn’t as 80s as Midnight Boy. This dansband song is perfect for it’s genre utilising folk and country elements with an upbeat track. There are girls in floral dresses dancing and playing instruments onstage to accompany this rather heartwarming performance from Hasse. The keychange poses absolutely no problem for him, with his experience showing throughout this song. Ever smiling, this song has a catchy tune and may just sneak in to one of the four qualifying positions tonight, standing out from what else is on offer. It will rely on the old-school televotes though, rather than the app.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:26 pm

Our throwback entry tonight comes from Hasse Andersson who is making his début tonight, despite having multiple album successes in the 80s in Sweden. His song is entitled “Guld och gröna skogar”.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:25 pm

The boys are stood in a triangle on the satelitte platform. You can tell who the brothers are and these young guys will be a popular vote on the app tonight, I imagine. The one that isn’t a brother has a guitar. All three boys sing, with the two main vocalists jumping off the platform and heading to the stage in the first chorus before the guitarist joins them before the second verse heads into the chorus. I must say that the vocals are a bit shaky but there’s a good production element into this performance, lots of lights and energy from the three boys. After the second verse, we have a rap verse and it’s very contemporary, this idea of rap/pop crossover. A band joins the boys for the final chorus. A clapping introduction takes us towards the climax, with pyros to accompany the track coming back in stronger than before. A lot to see and take in but this could score fairly well even if the vocals were poor in places. It ends a capella too.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:25 pm

JTR… not really sure what to do with this. The song goes nowhere, their voices are nothing to be excited about, they were remarkably off key more often than they were actually on key. So far the worst of the evening, but quality-wise very much in line with what we have seen this year in MF… rather mediocre.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:21 pm

Former Australian X Factor participants JTR make their début tonight, Swedish born and Australian raised boyband with “Building It Up”.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:21 pm

Caroline… LOVED.IT! Her scratchy voice, her stage presence, the jazzy number, the Sakis’ moment with the band… everything about this ticks all my boxes. I would love this to progress at the very least to andra chansen! Yup, I’m definitely sold.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:20 pm

With each click in the introduction to Caroline’s song, her staging begins to build, lights, band and floodlights. Her voice has that gravely tone which is perfect for her jazz inspired number. If this is your thing, it’s likely to be right up your street. She interacts a lot with her hands and long microphone wire, mic in hand. She’s dressed in a short silver sequined dress and it makes her stand out from the rather dark staging she has. The track does build in for the chorus rather well but it does kind of drown out her voice somewhat. The middle eight does not go down too well with her vocals missing some notes. It ends with passion and some choreography from Caroline alone.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:16 pm

Before we see the second entry, we head up to the voiceover booth where the lady in the booth seems to be commentating on her own life as well as announcing the entries each week and receiving telephone calls like an automated machine!

Next up is former finalist, Caroline Wennergren with “Black Swan”.

Rodrigo Romero Hidalgo
February 28, 20158:15 pm

Starting off the show with a bit of 80s pop… If you managed not to be distracted by his amazing six pack and you actually think the 80s rocked, this was an amazing entry. The performance was generally good, except in the high note building to the key change where he totally lost it. My personal opinion is… I quite like this!

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:14 pm

Our Prince, Madonna and Depeche Mode fan Midnight Boy begins his performance a capella before the huge 80s inspired track comes in and sounds like it could have been a huge hit 30 years ago. He’s dressed in a pink jacket, topless with tight black jeans and is supported by eight mannequins on stage. The vocal is pretty much flawless and Midnight Boy is joined by two topless males in the second chorus plus it becomes clear that one of the mannequins is actually real! A thumping start to the show and an excellent throwback and tribute to an excellent era of pop music.

Robin joins Sanna to introduce tonight’s acts with, predictably, huge cheers for JTR and of course, Måns Zelmerlöw.

She manages to avoid falling over today, luckily for her.

Welcome to the show, Rodrigo! Glad to have you alongside me.

Nathan Waddell
February 28, 20158:07 pm

The dancers throw Sanna off-stage through a metallic door before heading into a dance break. The dance break goes on an awfully long time before Sanna comes back and raps in her performance “Sanna vs Complete Dancers”. She actually fell over in dress rehearsals for this yesterday.

Sanna and Robin are off-stage doing their last minute preparations before Sanna enters the stage to belt out a rock ballad in which she tells us she is not a prostitute. As if we didn’t already know. She’s got a blue dress on underneath her trench coat.

Good evening Europe! I’m here, there and everywhere tonight! I’m joined by Rodrigo in bringing you our coverage of the final Semifinal of Melodifestivalen 2015.

Technical Lead: I am a huge pop music fan and I love Rihanna, Years & Years, Sia, Zara Larsson and Sam Smith. However, more importantly, I love Eurovision. Melodifestivalen is my favourite National Final and if things look out of place on the website, it's most definitely my fault.
