And off we go… Paula opens Supernova!

Edward Montebello

01. Paula Dukure – Look in the mirror

Ok we know Latvia sent an electronic ballad last year but this is too much! An electro song which in the beginning sounds promising but then the chorus changes my whole opinion on the song. The overall presentation lacks in a number of aspects. Not a great start but looking forward for others!

01. Paula Dukure – Look in the mirror

Ok we know Latvia sent an electronic ballad last year but this is too much! An electro song which in the beginning sounds promising but then the chorus changes my whole opinion on the song. The overall presentation lacks in a number of aspects. The lyrics are repetitive and this is surely not a great start. Looking forward for others!

The jury are commenting after each song. Since I can’t understand Latvian, I am trying to look for the jury’s body language. I feel they are not amused with Paula!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20167:42 pm

Ok, here is the beaver:)

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20167:44 pm

Can we have a Supernova show without the beaver?

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20167:45 pm

Twitter is already going viral: ESC Serbia says Oooh!!! Here it comes – !!!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20167:49 pm

Ok after some Beaver singing (am sure he’s get 12 points from many of us) it’s time for the second song.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20167:53 pm

02. ElectroFolk – Miracle drums

Here we have a contender, very early in the selection. It’s almost a male folk group, with the exception of a female backing vocalist. The sound of the drums is very effective. The background and light work used look impressive. The song is a build-up march and it received a warm applause. With some re-work this can be a decent song for Stockholm!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20167:59 pm

With reference to Miracle drums, esctips state (they are referring to the Irish entry in 2012

Drums worked so well at last time they were used.

03. Rūta Dūduma – Being a friend

Ok this is not a Eurovision show in the late 90’s but may be it can be a great contrast to the other batch of songs. She is singing about friendship and her presentation is very simple. Vocals are good but her piano ballad doesn’t build-up too much to make it memorable. A dated song which can be loved for just being simple!

Anthony tweets The chorus of Rūta’s entry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_2elQ

04. Ivo Grīsniņš Grīslis – We are the light

Another electronic ballad following Aminata’s good result in Vienna. In the beginning you can have the impression that it’s going to be Coldplay tune. Ivo’s vocals are excellent and he was very convincing infront of the camera. Can he be the light for Latvia in Stockholm? Not very keen on his chances!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:15 pm

Almost an hour has passed and yet we’re not half-way through! At least we saw rigabeaver !

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:19 pm

More of the rigabeaver … feeling festive with the trumpet!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:27 pm

05. Sabīne Berezina – My inspiration

Definitely not my inspiration. The song sounds messy. A bit of everything in a 3 minute song. It has schlager intro, house and electro tempo with a forgettable chorus. The vocals are not strong either in order to elevate this act. Can’t see this one proceed to the semi-final stage.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:29 pm

Maikel tweets on Sabīne – Where did she get that dress? On a market in 1992.. fire your stylist! and the song ZzzZ!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:37 pm

06. Edvards Grieze – New day

The sound of a saxophone in the beginning but no saxophonist on stage. Edvards appears cool and convincing on stage. He has a particular voice and the song is memorable. Am not amused by the lyrics however the melody is easy to dance and move with so why not giving another chance to Edvards?

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:38 pm

The jury members refer to Edvards “shitty” lyrics!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:45 pm

07. Marta Grigale – Choices

Marta is next with painted eyes and clad in a purple, so-called dress. Another electro mid-tempo pop song. Sometimes she sounds out of tune and she looked very nervous. She sings about choices and my choice is that this the last time I would listen to this song!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:50 pm

The case of less is better ltvsupernova

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20168:58 pm

08. Catalepsia – Damnation

The dramatic voice of the lead singer introduces a rock ballad which doesn’t give me anything to look forward for. The chorus seems to build-up for some sort of a crescendo but then it immediately fades away. If this goes to Sweden, it will surely get lost!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:01 pm

Just before this song the poor Riga Beaver lost his voice. Instead of singing he started to mime!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:11 pm

09. Samanta Tīna – We live for love

Samanta is one of the favourites in tonight’s show. She is wearing a long green dress as parts of her long dress are used as a background for the song. She gives a flawless performance. It starts as an up-tempo song but soon inter-changes to a dubstep ballad. The act is clearly built for Eurovision. Am beyond doubt that this one advances tonight!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:18 pm

we have a contender to sing Love Injected

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:22 pm

Ben Charles Gray tweets: Mum just came in and went “what you watching?” and I said “Latvian telly.” while was performing. She left.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:22 pm

Last song on stage soon!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:27 pm

10. Justs – Heartbeat

Justs is alone on stage and the introduction sounded promising, however the chorus made me think twice about this song. In the end the background show the national flag colours. His vocals were good but I can’t find something more special. It is very likely that he overcomes the first heat hurdle.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:31 pm

Aminata, the writer of Heartbeat is being interviewed right now!

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:34 pm

If the choice was in my hands, I would pick these;

ElectroFolk – Miracle drums
Edvards Grieze – New day
Samanta Tīna – We live for love
Justs – Heartbeat

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:36 pm

Time for a recap and then may be a beaver interval act?

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:40 pm

Justs is currently leading the tele-voting, followed by Catalepsia.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:45 pm

Anticipation on who the jury will pick for Supernova’s semi-final. On the other hand, the public choice seems pretty obvious.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:48 pm

Another recap as we are waiting for the results.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:51 pm

Results are coming out now… who are the 4 qualifying acts?

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:52 pm

Catalepsia qualifies with Damnation.

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:52 pm

As expected Justs advances to the semi-final stage with Heartbeat

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:53 pm

These were the songs chosen by the public, let’s see who the jury chose…

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:54 pm

Ivo Grīsniņš Grīslis qualifies with We are the light

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:54 pm

Shocking, the last qualifier is Marta Grigale with Choices

Edward Montebello
February 7, 20169:57 pm

The qualifiers for Supernova’s semi-final are;

Ivo Grīsniņš Grīslis – We are the light
Marta Grigale – Choices
Catalepsia – Damnation
Justs – Heartbeat

Didn’t see Marta & Ivo going through and though Catalepsia were among the favourites, I tried so hard to believe that they’re not going to make it!
