Eurovision host Nikkie de Jager has explained how all of her outfits at the Eurovision Song Contest this week refer to the transgender flag. The same goes for her final outfit, a purple gown. Trans rights are an important topic for the Eurovision host, as she came out as transgender in early 2020.
Trans rights are human rights
The important message that Nikkie de Jager, also known as NikkieTutorials, is conveying is the fact that trans rights are human rights. Ever since her coming out, she has explained that labels are the least important part of her story: Truly being able to be yourself, that’s what’s her number one priority.
During the second semifinal, the references to the trans flag were the most visible and noteworthy. The dress she wore there, designed by MAISON the FAUX, was stoned with tiny white, light pink and light blue stones. In the first semi, the David Laport dress Nikkie wore, had a subtle reference near the split of the dress.
Tonight, we will see Nikkie de Jager in a purple gown. Amsterdam fashion designer Edwin Oudshoorn is the man behind the dress and he too has included a reference to the trans pride flag, as Nikkie will wear the trans flag on her heart tonight.
Praise galore for Nikkie de Jager
Over the course of the past week, we’ve seen a lot of praise for Nikkie de Jager. Her skills as a Eurovision host have gone down well. Both in local internaitonal media, people have credited the 27-year old make-up artist for her skills. Her witty attitude, as well as her grasp of the English language have made her a favourite for many.
Originally, the broadcasters NPO, NOS and Avrotros only booked her as the online host for 2020. However, after Eurovision: Europe Shine A Light last year, the reactions were so good that they decided to promote Nikkie and make her one of the four main hosts, alongside Chantal Janzen, Jan Smit and Edsilia Rombley.
