Welcome to The Xtra Files, our series which will give you an insight into what the team at ESCXTRA think of your favourite entries into this year’s contest! Today, we review Azerbaijan.
Now that all the songs have been released, we are able to review each and every one of them. Our honest and brutal reviews will keep you entertained until the rehearsals start on 30 April! We will also each give a score out of 10 for every entry, and create an ESCXTRA leaderboard of the entries!
Today we have reviews of the Azerbaijani entry, ‘X My Heart’ by Aisel, from Dominik, Lisa, Nathan, Luke, Sami and Yassia. Let’s get started!
The Reviews
Dominik
Azerbaijan always sends bops! At first I wasn’t sure about this year, but the revamp version got me. This is going for another Top 10 result. I think they will put on a great performance and will therefore deliver in Lisbon. It’s not outstanding, but I think the Top 10 are more than possible for Azerbaijan.
Lisa
Luna moon me up, my metaphorical wig is in orbit! Who knew Azerbaijan could do what’s almost a Schlager banger? Three years in a row of upbeat entries, they’re spoiling me. I love a cheesy feel good anthem and this ticks all the boxes! That chorus makes me want to get straight on the dance floor! It didn’t really need the revamp, but after a few listens the extra symphonic alien sounding elements and electronic clicks really work to enhance the production. I also want to be proposed to with the line “misty moon, I’m your loon.”
Nathan
Whilst I really, really like this pop song while I’m listening to it, I find it’s very difficult to remember either the melody or the hook after the three minutes is over. I fear that the audience at home will have the same reaction during the semifinal, unless it is spectacularly staged… which Azerbaijan can do!
Luke
This is probably my favourite entry ever from Azerbaijan. It’s so catchy and has such a happy feeling to it! The big, big issue here…..misty moon I’m your loon? Luna moon me up? Is this a My Little Pony song?
Sami
I was expecting so much more from Aisel than this generic pop song with cliché lyrics. It is well produced and catchy, but doesn’t bring anything new to the contest. The revamp didn’t make it any more interesting either.
Yassia
Great song from Azerbaijan this year. It’s so simple, but thanks to the chorus, it gets stuck in your head and you can sing it the whole day. Maybe it has this effect only on me, but I hope I’m not alone;) Best of luck to Azerbaijan!

Leaderboard
A wide range of scores leaves Azerbaijan unable to luna moon up any higher than…11th position. The top 10 was so close, SO CLOSE, but looks like The Land of Fire needed an extra spark of something (juggling torches in Lisbon, perhaps?) to convince the less impressed members of our team.
