As anticipation builds for Canada’s first ever Eurovision participation, CBC/Radio-Canada have revealed the chosen act will perform a song featuring both French and English in Burgas, Bulgaria next May.
🇨🇦 Canada’s Eurovision debut to include two official languages
As the registration portal opens for Canada’s Eurovision 2027 selection, more details have been revealed regarding the song the winning act will perform. National broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada has confirmed that the entry for the chosen act will be performed in the two official languages of Canada – English and French.
“[The] song will include both of Canada’s official languages and may also include other languages. The selected artist will be consulted regarding their comfort level in the official languages so that the song can be written accordingly.”
Other criteria for interested artists to consider before submitting their applications are:
- Artist(s) must be a native Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
- Artist((s) must be over 18 on 1 May 2027.
- Hold a valid passport and/or visa documentation to be able to travel to Burgas and also for song promotion.
- Complete and pass background checks.
- Have live experience and be able to compete under pressure – both on-stage and media engagements.
- Have a creative artistic vision or a charismatic, unique personality with good stage presence.
- Ideally be established as an act within the European market.
- Having an online social media presence is considered beneficial.
- Ideally the artist(s) will already have ambitions to compete in Eurovision.
- The artist(s) and songwriter(s) will agree to transfer rights to CBC/Radio-Canada and the EBU.
The artist submission window closes on September 9. From this, a shortlist of artists will be chosen and a full public announcement expected in the Autumn. The artist selection will be showcased using the Eurovision Song Contest Canada website. The platform will feature uploaded videos of the selected finalists, with the public being able to have its say in an online vote. These votes will be combined with the jury votes from a panel of music experts to choose the Canadian act for Eurovision 2027.
The winning act will then collaborate with a team of industry professionals to create the first Canadian Eurovision entry.
