Donny Darko
The second part of this native language double-hander along with “Nieko Verta“, new song “Žiūrėk ką padarei” sees Donny Montell continue with his darker, urban infused, electronic beats. Lyrically it’s just as dark too, describing a relationship that’s long soured and how someone can lose themselves to substances to fill the void. Written in collaboration with Melodifestivalen hit-maker of “Heroes” fame, Joy Deb, it’s a change in direction from Donny’s usual pop sound.
Directed by Dominykas Bliznikas, the video enhances the vibe of the song, showing the highs and lows of the turbulent relationship. Also highlighting the struggles in dealing with the depression that can develop when it feels like there is no escape. As Donny himself explains:
The main idea of the song and the video clip is the relationship. The girl is very fake on Instagram, her importance’s being money and attention. I see and understand this, but I can not escape it because of love for her. All the consequences are suffering and destructive thoughts. The only thing that helps to keep up with it – drugs, alcohol and thoughts about suicide … But another perspective is me as an artist. I wanted to make that clip so that people would notice that such a person is obliged to help.
Last night the song was premiered at a private concert held in the Botanical Gardens of Vilnius University for Donny’s most loyal fans. Accompanied by orchestra, the more intimate acoustic version of the live performance can be seen here.
Donny-Vision
Lithuania’s household name is no stranger to the Eurovision stage. He first made his name in 2012 blindfolding his way to a respectable 14th in the Baku contest with “Love Is Blind”. He returned for the Stockholm contest in 2016 and flipped his way to Lithuania’s second ever top 10 finish, coming 9th with “I’ve Been Waiting For This Night”. 2018 saw Donny try again in a behind the scenes role, adding his twist to Paula’s pop banger “1, 2, 3“, which made the Final of this years Eurovizijos.
