Svala Björgvinsdóttir, who just signed with SONY Denmark, released two new tracks this past week. One of them, “For the Night”, is part of her solo project. It’s an incredibly danceable track, and for many of us here at escXtra, it has sailed directly into our summer playlists! The other is a cooperation with Reykjavíkurdætur!
“Maybe Just For the Night”
“For the Night” isn’t very far removed from what Svala has done before; electro-pop with a rather sensual beat. The song is about a couple who have broken up, but then one night they meet again. They obviously still have feelings for each other, both have been drinking, and Svala is telling herself “maybe just for the night”. She also released the video, which is a piece of art, directed by the wonderful photographer Saga Sig. In addition to being a singer, Svala is also a clothing designer. Her designs have often been edgy, and this video shows that she still goes her own way fashionwise.
Reykjavíkurdætur feat Svala
Svala’s other release last week, is a cooperation with the all female rap group, Reykjavíkurdætur (Daughters of Reykjavik). In “Ekkert Drama (No Drama)” they sing about just that: how they wanna just go out and have a good time with their girls, without any drama. By the way, this is not the first time they feature a Eurovision/Söngvakeppnin singer. On one of their biggest hits “D.R.U.S.L.A. (Slut)“, they got a little help from an old friend of ours; Ásdís María!
Svala in Eurovision Song Contest
Svala Björgvins represented Iceland at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv. There she performed her song “Paper” in the first semi-final. Unfortunately, Europe didn’t fall in love with Svala’s song the same way Icelanders did. She only finished 15th, thus failing to qualify for the grand final.
Quite a few Icelandic fans would like Reykjavíkurdætur to take part in Söngvakeppnin, and believe they would do well in Eurovision. What do you think?
