Today, Michael Rice, who represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv with “Bigger Than Us”, released his brand new single “Breaking Free”. We thought the release of his new single is the perfect time to have a little chat with him about his music, the future, and of course Eurovision.
“During Coronavirus I found the sound and the path I wanna go down as an artist”
The song was written on Christmas eve in the Netherlands. “Breaking Free” is the start of a new chapter, as many know Michael from doing Eurovision, X-Factor and All Together Now, so this marks a new start as he wants to break free from being known for doing this shows and rather wants to be known for being Michael Rice. Lyrically he wanted to put everything into the song. Also that it resonates with his fans!
He celebrated the release by staying up till midnight and checking everyone’s reactions to the song. A song release is always something special and especially at these wild times, it’s interesting to see what people out there are thinking. In the last couple of weeks, Michael was working on new music from his home and worked together with others via Skype and Zoom.
Some really big things will happen in September/October
Somebody, Think of me and Breaking Free are very personal tracks to Michael. The album however will show a totally different side of him and he is very curious to see what the fans will think of it. It’s very important for him that he is part of the creating process of all of his songs, as this is making the songs even more personal.
When he entered the UK selection show he had no idea what awaits him at Eurovision. He would totally do it again as an artist or songwriter and has so many good memories from the time at Eurovision especially with the fans.
Thank you so much, Michael, for taking the time to speak to us! Happy release day!
