🇲🇹 JESC countdown: what’s going on in the life of Gaia Cauchi?

Memorable return

The countdown to Junior Eurovision 2020 continues. Today we take you back to the contest of 2013 in Kyiv, Ukraine. After a short break, Malta returned to the contest, and what a return they made!

Throwback to Junior Eurovision 2013

Although 2013 had as many participants as the year before, some changes took place in the list of participating countries. We said goodbye to on-time participants Israel and Albania. Another country that withdrew, but who participated in the contest since the very beginning, was Belgium. On the other hand, we saw Malta and North Macedonia returning. We also welcomed a new country, San Marino.

Malta went for an internal selection and chose Gaia Cauchi to represent the country in Ukraine. She went to Junior Eurovision with a ballad that wore a true Aretha Franklin vibe, called “The Start”. During the European final, Gaia performed 11th out of 12 candidates. After an exciting voting, including a kids jury for the first time, Malta won! That marked the first victory for Malta in a Eurovision related competition. Gaia won with a total of 130 points. She received points from 11 countries + the kids jury. 5 of them gave Malta 12 points (Kids Jury, Moldova, North Macedonia, The Netherlands and Ukraine).

Life after Junior Eurovision 2013

Gaia’s passion for music existed since her very early childhood. She experienced her first international performance in 2011 when she appeared on the popular Italian TV show Ti Lascio Una Canzone. She challenged herself with Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” and left the audience with open mouth. Gaia also won Sanremo Junior Music Festival, where she sang “One Night Only” from the hitfilm “Dreamgirls”.

Building up on her career

After winning Junior Eurovision, Gaia released a few singles between 2013 and now. In 2014 she recorded the theme song for the Junior contest that year, which wore the title of “#together”.
