Rotterdam 2021

馃嚜馃嚫 Two-song national final for Blas Cant贸 to be held in February

A new start for the "Universo" singer

Spanish broadcaster RTVE has announced that a two-song national final will be held in February to select Blas Cant贸’s entry for Eurovision 2021. The two-hour gala show will be broadcast live and the winning entry will be selected by a public vote.

RTVE have confirmed that the two songs, which were selected from a shortlist, will be released shortly. The national final entries were selected by RTVE and the Warner record company, along with Blas and his team.

“The voice of the Eurofans”

Speaking to RTVE, Blas said that he wanted the Eurovision community to be involved in selecting his song for the contest in Rotterdam.

This year has given me another opportunity. I want to have the voice of the Eurofans. I want the whole world to come with me by the hand and support each other because, in Eurovision, we all go. The energy of Eurovision in Spain is contagious.

– Blas Cant贸, speaking to RTVE

It was initially announced last month that Blas’ song would be selected via a national final, after RTVE invited him back to represent Spain at Eurovision 2021. He was originally due to represent the nation at the 2020 contest with “Universo”, before it was cancelled.

Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest

Debuting in 1961 with “Estando contigo”, Spain have always had mixed luck in the Eurovision Song Contest. A two-time winning nation in 1968 and 1969, they are now a member of the “Big 5” meaning that they have never missed a final. However, Spain have not had a top five finish since 1995 when Anabel Conde finished second with “Vuelve conmigo”.

In recent years, Spain have scored a string of poor results and for the past five contests, they have not managed to make it into the top 20. In Tel Aviv in 2019, Miki represented the Iberian nation with “La venda” and finished in 22nd place with 54 points. Last year, Blas Cant贸 was set to represent Spain with “Universo”, before the contest was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
