We had the opportunity to sit down with Latvia’s Citi Zēni ahead of their performance at Eurovision in Concert! They will perform “Eat Your Salad” in the First Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest on May 10th.
The message of ‘Eat Your Salad’
Latvia’s entry this year is a fun, upbeat song about being vegetarian, recycling, and saving the earth by being green. Despite its fun music and suggestive lyrics, the song does have an underlying serious message.
We tried putting a very serious message into something very fun. And I hope that we have succeeded, we have definitely turned the attention towards the issue [of environmentalism]. At the end of the day, not everything that isn’t serious has to be meaningless at the same time. And that’s what Eat Your Salad is about! It’s about having fun, it’s also about escapism, running away from the world and everything that’s going around us, at least for those 3 minutes.
Greta Thunberg in the ‘Eat Your Salad’ music video?
The band also revealed that originally, environmental activist Greta Thunberg was supposed to star in the music video for ‘Eat Your Salad’!
She was supposed to be the main character in the music video. Unfortunately, it fell through, the world turned on its head. In the end of the day, she is familiar with our song, she follows us on Instagram. We’ve been talking in our dm’s with Greta and hopefully we get to meet her one day!
