Rehearsal review

Stage presentation

First thing that needs to be said is that this is easily the heaviest use of AR effects to date; the performance opens with fake rain effects, and in the bridge, the camera shakes with a flash of AR lightening, paired with the shaking of a camera.

Ochman is joined by four dancers, who are dressed – essentially – like the dementors from Harry Potter. They thrash around him throughout the second 2/3 of the performance, and add a sense of dynamism.

Costumes and styling

Ochman is dressed in a very standard black suit; with the darkness of the stage, I would have preferred to see him in white to create a sense of contrast.

Vocal quality

He was perfect, an absolute powerhouse.

Overall impression

I cannot deny that this is a very impactful performance, and feels like a total ‘moment’. However, I can deny that the effects used look expensive and purposeful, because they don’t. The AR rain effects on the second verse in particular look very cheap.

That said, the camera shake with blue lightening used for the bridge make for a very gripping moment, which I believe will go down well with televoters. This is looking like a top 10 performance, even if it isn’t to my taste.
