The former BBC Radio 2 presenter and Eurovision Song Contest spokesperson, Colin Berry has sadly passed away at the age of 79.
Colin Berry – the voice of a nation
Born in 1946 in rural Hertfordshire, Colin Berry discovered his talent and love for radio at an early age. After several years working in local radio, Colin made his career breakthrough on national radio. In 1973 Colin joined BBC Radio 2. A commitment to being the voice of a nation for thirty-three years on the station. Colin became the first overnight host, following the move to 24-hour broadcasting. In his later radio career, Colin moved to BBC Three Counties Radio from 2004-2019.
“All of us at Radio 2 were saddened to hear of the passing of Colin Berry, who was part of our on air family for many years. We send our condolences to his family and friends.”
Helen Thomas, (Head of BBC Radio 2)
On television, Colin Berry was a familiar figure to Eurovision fans in the United Kingdom. Between the years of 1977 and 2002, Colin was the UK spokesperson who read out the votes of the UK jury. Originally this was a role that involved the spokespeople linking up with the Eurovision hosts and relaying the votes over the telephone. It was not until 1994 where through the magic of satellite television that Colin was seen on screen giving the votes live. A tradition that has become a staple of the Eurovision viewing experience to this day.
The thoughts and condolences of the ESCXTRA.com team are with Colin Berry’s family and friends at this sad time.
