RÚV asks the EBU for a breakdown of Iceland’s televote

Following the requests for an audit made by the Spanish broadcaster RTVE, other broadcasters have stated that they want the EBU to give them a detailed breakdown of their televote.

Stefán Eiríksson, RÚV’s director, stated that the broadcaster will request information from the European Broadcasting Union about the Eurovision televote from the Grand Final. He explained that he will ask for the same information RTVE asked about.

He also explained why, as a national broadcaster, RÚV does not have access to this information.

The telephone vote is entirely the responsibility of the EBU, which negotiates with telecommunications companies in each country about its implementation, and therefore, we do not have access to any information other than that which has already been made public at this stage.

In addition to the traditional televote, which was organised by Vodafone on the island, Icelandic voters could also use the esc.vote platform, which is directly operated by the EBU and its voting partner Once Germany (formerly Digame), hence the absence of data on the national broadcaster’s part.

Similar calls for transparency and complete breakdown have come from other broadcasters, including RTVE from Spain, VRT from Belgium, RTV SLO from Slovenia or Yle from Finland. It comes as some of these broadcasters cast doubts about the validity of their national public vote, when Israel won the televote in the Grand Final last Saturday.

The results last Saturday night were interesting and will undoubtedly spark discussions within the EBU, which we will, as before, monitor and take part in.
