Gonçalo Tavares: “I believe in this contest.” [Interview]

With Festival da Canção taking place tonight, spoke to one of the hopefuls hoping to represent Portugal in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. He qualified for the final last Tuesday with his song Tu Tens Uma Mágica: It’s Gonçalo Tavares! Hey Gonçalo! Thanks for taking the time to speak to us! How are you, such a short time before the Portuguese national final?
Gonçalo Tavares: I’m fine, and now even better because I’ve made it to the Portuguese final!
X: Could you tell us something about yourself?
G: I am a musician, I’ve singing since my childhood and I also play the piano. I studied at the Jazz School of Porto and I have always dedicated my life to music. In addition to the countless albums that I have produced and participated on, I recorded my first solo album in 2010 and the second in 2014 which was digitally edited by FarolMusica. The album was called Gonçalo Tavares SE – and you can hear it on iTunes , Spotify etc. as well as on Youtube, where you can hear most of my music!

X: Why did you decide you want to go to Eurovision?
G: Because I believe in this contest. it is a program where we are asked to compose and sing an original song and this makes all the difference .
X: Could you tell us more about your song, Tu Tens Uma Mágica?
G: Tu Tens Uma Mágica, which means You have magic, is a Pop/ Dance song that speaks of a trip to the South Seas in search of someone who has that magic and a great capacity to achieve the goals it proposes. That certain someone is in all of us.
X: What’s going to be your special ingredient to win the national final?
G: Let’s see, the most important thing is if you can bring the energy of your song across. There are some changes to be made on stage. We are definitely looking at what we could do!
X: What’s your favourite place in Portugal?
G: In the North. There are wonderful little towns in the North, where we pass stunning holidays in the countryside.
X: What’s your favourite thing to eat or drink?
G: I love a good red wine! I don’t eat pork and I really prefer white meat.
X: Are you a Eurovision fan?
G: I love watching it!
X: Do you have an all time favourite Eurovision song?
G: Definitely yes! Two, even. ABBA with Waterloo and Johnny Logan with What’s Another Year. Those are songs forever.
X: Finally, do you have a message for the readers of
